The Pakistan cricket team failed to make it to the top four of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Requiring to beat Sri Lanka by more than 65 runs in the Super 8s, the ‘Men in Green’ barely managed to escape with a five-run win in Pallekele this past weekend.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) subsequently ordered a brutal punishment for Pakistan players. Several reports indicated that the board will be imposing a fine of 5 million Pakistani rupees on all Pakistan cricketers for failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

While the decision has largely been mocked across the cricketing fraternity, former Australia opener Usman Khawaja has now weighed in on the matter. Taking to his Instagram account, Khawaja shared a minute-long video trolling the PCB for needlessly putting additional pressure on the Pakistan players.

Usman Khawaja roasts PCB for fining players

On March 5, Usman Khawaja took to his Instagram account and shared a minute-long video where the former cricketer can be seen addressing the “fine” imposed on Pakistan players by the PCB. The ex-Australian opener admitted to not believing the report at first, and is now trolling the board for putting additional pressure on the ‘Men in Green’ players.

He said, “Just heard that Pakistani players got fined after the T20 World Cup. I didn’t believe it at first, but it’s on Cricinfo so must be true. It’s absolutely amazing that the PCB could think this is a good idea. I’m laughing but I can’t believe it. What high performance team in the entire world, let alone cricket, have players getting fined for losing games?”

Khawaja equates Pakistan Cricket with “drama series”

Usman Khawaja added, “They are not trying to lose cricket games, and how do you think that will make them perform better next time? It will only put more pressure and more stress on the players. I mean, they are under enough pressure. The whole country is watching them. Even the selectors in the past have put the pressure on the players. And now on top of that, you are fining them?”

The 39-year-old further sympathized with the “poor Pakistani players” and joked that Pakistan cricket always seems to surprise him.

The 88-Test veteran said, “I really feel for the Pakistani players. Poor Pakistani players. I’m lost for words honestly. I can’t believe it. Every time I think Pakistan will not surprise me, they surprise me. It’s like a drama series. Can’t wait for the next episode.”

Pakistan reeling in post-T20 World Cup trauma

The ripple effects of Pakistan’s dismal showing in the 2026 T20 World Cup seem to go beyond the fines. Still struggling to cope with the aftermath of a disastrous exit from the tournament despite playing all their matches in Sri Lanka, the PCB recently made drastic changes to the squad for the upcoming ODI series in Bangladesh.

Naming a 15-player squad, the board dropped legendary batter Babar Azam and fellow under-performing Saim Ayub from the national line-up.

Pakistan will now face Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series between March 11 and March 15. All matches will be hosted by the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
