Australia Women have lifted the Women's T20 World Cup title for the seventh time by defeating England Women. As they strolled past the victory line, the match was not all smooth and fair for either side, especially the hosts, England Women, as Australia Women took them on at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground on Sunday, July 5.
England Women posted a paltry total of 150 runs on the board, with Australia Women closing the chase with 17 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand. While the match was full of thrilling moments, a rare controversial incident also emerged, with Sophie Ecclestone at the centre of it.
Sophie Ecclestone Fumes At Umpires After Controversial Decision
The England spin-bowling all-rounder was seen fuming at the umpires over a controversial catch decision that potentially took away England's chance to swing the momentum back in their favour.
Notably, on the fourth ball of the 17th over, as Linsey Smith bowled a delivery around the fourth stump, Ellyse Perry attempted to loft the ball towards mid-off. As she stepped out to drive the ball uppishly, Ecclestone, who was stationed at mid-off, dived forward and took a fabulous catch with both hands.
As she completed the athletic catch, the TV umpire decided to check the legality of it. Sophie Ecclestone was found to have her fingers underneath the ball. The replay was shown multiple times, but ultimately the TV umpire reached the conclusion of reversing the on-field decision and declaring Perry not out.

Sophie Ecclestone Angry At Reversal Of Perry Decision
As the "Not Out" verdict appeared on the big screen, Sophie Ecclestone was absolutely furious. She marched towards the bowler's-end umpire, mouthing words of frustration. Ellyse Perry had almost walked off the field but then returned to continue her innings.
Notably, the replays appeared to show that Ecclestone had taken the catch cleanly. It looked as though she had managed to get her fingers underneath the ball. However, Kim Cotton, the TV umpire, declared it not out, a decision that infuriated Ecclestone.
She was visibly animated on the field as she charged towards the on-field umpire. However, Charlie Dean intervened to stop her from engaging in any kind of spat.

Nevertheless, as the moment grabbed headlines, the dropped opportunity could not have dealt much damage, given that Australia required only 11 runs from 24 deliveries before Ellyse Perry's potential dismissal by Sophie Ecclestone.
England Women saw Nat Sciver-Brunt as their saviour with the bat alongside Freya Kemp. However, their 80-run partnership was not enough to challenge Australia, who recovered from a shaky start through Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield.
The duo added 100 runs from 67 deliveries to dismantle the English bowling attack, helping Australia secure a commanding victory over the hosts and seal their seventh Women's T20 World Cup title.
