Rishabh Pant spent the entirety of Day 3 of India’s series-deciding second Test against Sri Lanka on the sidelines.
Battling shoulder pain, Pant was replaced by back-up wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel behind the stumps.
Despite Pant’s absence, the 28-year-old still managed to hog the limelight, albeit after stumps on the third day. In an incident captured by the crowd, the cricketer got angry at a particular fan at a time when he was enjoying the rains in Colombo.

Shortly after stumps on Day 3 at the SSC Ground in Colombo, Rishabh Pant was spotted sitting near the boundary and casually embracing the city’s evening rains.

A fan from a distance urged the Indian wicketkeeper-batter to get out of the rain as he could catch a “fever”. After repeatedly yelling towards the cricketer, a seemingly-angry Pant responded that he might catch a fever from the fan instead. Fan: Rishabh bhai... Bukhar ho jayega. Idhar ka pani alag hai.
Pant: Bukhaar karva ke hi jana tum... Nahi hoga to bhi karva dena.
Fan: Nahi, Nahi bhai... We love you bhai.
Rishabh Pant out of action, return timeline uncertain
Rishabh Pant seems to be dealing with more than one injury during India’s all-important series-deciding second Test match of the tour against Sri Lanka.
On Day 1 of the match, the cricketer arrived to the crease at 186-3 after the fall of captain Shubman Gill in the 52nd over. However, after reaching just 3* off 15 balls, the blistering left-handed batter was struck on his wrist from a short ball by Lahiru Kumara.
Pant subsequently received medical assistance before he walked off the field. It is worth noting that the 28-year-old resumed his innings on Day 2 to compile 63 off 89 balls with six boundaries and two huge sixes in Colombo.
After seemingly recovering from his wrist injury, Pant is now suffering from shoulder pain, as confirmed by his teammate Dhruv Jurel and India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel.
Moreover, Morkel even recently hinted that the senior wicketkeeper-batter might well be ruled out of the playing XI for the remainder of the Test. The BCCI has also not given any timeline regarding his recovery and return to the field, thus indicating that the cricketer’s shoulder pain is more serious than it seemed.
Injury-prone Pant smashes records
Despite battling wrist injury and shoulder pain, Rishabh Pant smashed a couple of huge Test records through the course of his fiery 63 against Sri Lanka on Day 2 of the Colombo Test.
For starters, his knock took him past MS Dhoni to become the most successful Asian wicketkeeper-batter in overseas Test matches. Pant also surpassed Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan to become the leading run-maker in WTC Tests.
As of now, it remains to be seen when will the 28-year-old be able to return to the field for Team India.
