Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis looked clearly angry and disappointed during the 16th T20 match of the T20 World Cup 2026 between Sri Lanka and Oman. The match was played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Thursday, February 12.

Although the game was filled with strong performances, one incident involving Kusal Mendis became a major talking point.

From the start, Mendis appeared focused and determined. He was batting confidently and helping Sri Lanka build a strong total. However, things suddenly changed in the final stages of the innings.

Big mix-up leads to costly run-out

During the 19th over of Sri Lanka’s innings, a serious mix-up happened between Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis while running between the wickets. At that time, Kusal was playing very well and was close to finishing the innings on a high note.

The bowler, Jiten Ramanandi, delivered an off-cutter outside the off stump. Kamindu Mendis tried to hit the ball past the bowler toward the wide mid-on area.

At first, Kamindu immediately called for two runs. However, when he noticed that Ramanandi had reached the ball very quickly, he changed his mind and decided not to take the second run.

By then, Kusal Mendis had already turned and was halfway down the pitch. When Kamindu sent him back, it was simply too late. Kusal had no chance of returning safely to the crease.

As a result, he was run out after scoring a solid 61 runs off 45 balls. It was a disappointing way for his innings to end, especially since he had worked hard to build it.

Sri Lanka post a challenging target for Oman

Meanwhile, talking about the match, Oman won the toss and chose to bowl first. Sri Lanka had a decent start; however, Oman struck early during the powerplay. They dismissed Pathum Nissanka for 13 runs and Kamil Mishara for 8 runs off 7 balls. These early wickets created some pressure on Sri Lanka.

Despite this, Kusal Mendis steadied the innings with his well-made 61 runs. In addition, Pavan Rathnayake played an outstanding knock, scoring 60 runs off just 28 balls. His innings included eight fours and one six, which helped increase the scoring rate quickly. At the same time, the Sri Lankan captain contributed with a solid half-century, scoring 50 runs.

Later, in the second-last over of the innings, Kamindu Mendis added a quick 19 runs off just 7 balls. Notaby, his late burst of runs gave Sri Lanka the final push they needed.

As a result, Sri Lanka managed to post a massive total of 226 runs on the scoreboard, setting a tough target for Oman to chase.
