The Nepal Cricket Team has done the unthinkable. The rising Asian side is set to become the first Associate nation to feature in official practice matches with a Big Bash League (BBL) franchise.

Sydney Thunder have opened discussions with the Nepal national team about playing warm-up games ahead of the BBL season. For a team still fighting for regular exposure against Full Members, this marks a major step forward.

Sydney Thunder plan to include Nepal in the BBL

Meanwhile, the Sydney Thunder are deeply connected to Western Sydney’s multicultural community. The club has strong ties with South Asian fans, including the large Nepalese diaspora in the region.

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland revealed discussions about inviting Nepal to play BBL practice matches before the tournament window. The idea is simple. Give the Nepalese community a chance to watch their national team live. Do it in an authentic way.

"Without getting the cart before the horse, we've had discussions with the Nepalese national team about coming and playing BBL practice matches for us in the window just before the tournament. Having the Nepalese community in Western Sydney be able to come and watch that match... that to me is ways we can do things authentically," Copeland told Cricket.com.au.

Also, Copeland made it clear this is not a marketing gimmick. The club regularly attends community events without expecting returns. Ticket retention is strong. Fan engagement is booming, and Western Sydney remains their focus.

"The way we're thinking about South Asian engagement generally, whether it's the Nepalese national team or whether it's the Indian diaspora, is don't do things because it seems like a great idea right now, it's thinking about who we are to our core. If someone in Western Sydney was to talk about as a club, what would they say?" he added.

If confirmed, Nepal would become the first Associate nation to get such structured involvement with a BBL franchise setup. That exposure could be priceless for the players.

Rohit Paudel calls for bigger opportunities

Playing in the BBL would give the Nepal Cricket Team the exposure they desperately need. Recently, Nepal captain Rohit Paudel vocalised the need for more matches against top teams.

After their narrow loss to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2025, expectations were high. But regular fixtures against Full Members did not follow.

Since then, the Nepal Cricket Team has played very few top-tier sides. Paudel believes that must change. He wants at least one or two series each year against major teams. That, he says, is how Nepal will grow.

He also stressed how important it would be if teams like India, Australia, or England toured Nepal.

Their recent performances back that claim. Nepal pushed England to the brink in the 2026 T20 World Cup. They nearly chased down 185 in Mumbai, and hence, the belief inside the squad is strong.

Spotlight grows as Nepal win respect

Nepal Cricket Team's close contests have not gone unnoticed. Former greats like Dale Steyn have praised their talent. The team’s fearless style has won fans.

Playing all their World Cup matches at the Wankhede Stadium has also helped. Asian conditions suit them. Familiar surfaces build confidence.

Rohit Paudel said the key lesson is handling pressure. In crunch moments, execution matters most. Nepal are learning quickly. Big crowds no longer scare them.

Now, with possible BBL involvement and growing global attention, Nepal cricket stands at an important moment. They are not just competing anymore. They are earning respect.

If these opportunities continue, the Nepal Cricket Team could soon move from underdogs to genuine contenders on the international stage.
