A major controversy struck in the opening game of IPL 2026 between RCB and SRH at the Chinnaswamy Stadium involving Heinrich Klaasen and Phil Salt. The much-awaited game started off in the home team’s favour as three wickets fell quickly, leaving the visitors in trouble.
SRH were reduced to 29/3 after 4.2 overs and were in deep trouble. However, skipper Ishan Kishan and keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen pulled the Men in Orange out of the slump. Notably, the duo stitched a crucial 97-run stand for the 4th wicket before the controversial catch.
Phil Salt’s Catch Sparks Major Controversy
Romario Shepherd came to bowl the 14th over of the match. On the 1st ball of the over, Klassen looked for a maximum and nearly got one. Meanwhile, Phil Salt, who was standing at the ropes, slipped but still caught the ball despite not being in total control of his body.
The catch was controversial because the RCB opener fell backwards after taking the catch, and the fans argued that he touched the boundary cushion behind him. The umpires asked the SRH batter to wait and opted for a review.
The third umpire checked the catch from multiple angles, and there was no conclusive evidence to show that Phil Salt actually touched the cushion. After about five minutes of delay, the umpire gave the decision in RCB’s favour.
The stadium erupted with joy, but the SRH fans expressed their disappointment on social media, accusing RCB of cheating.
Heinrich Klaasen Argues With Umpire Before Leaving Pitch
Heinrich Klaasen was also unhappy with the decision and was captured arguing with one of the officials at the boundary rope. The SRH batter engaged in a heated chat before walking back to the pavilion.
The right-handed batter scored 31 (22). The dismissal proved costly for SRH because they lost Salil Arora for a dismal score, bringing RCB back into the hunt.

Heinrich Klaasen Fears IPL Fine After Argument
Klaasen lost his cool after getting out but now fears IPL fine. Notably, the board is quite strict when it comes to imposing penalty on players for lack of discipline. Acts like aggressive celebrations, argument with umpire, on-field fights are few examples of getting fined.
Therefore, the former South Africa star batter now fears getting heavily penalised for his act on the opening day of IPL 2026. Besides the controversial catch, RCB were brilliant in the field.
Notably, Phil Salt plucked onto an absolute stunner to dismiss Ishan Kishan, an effort that might go down in history as one of the best catches in the league. However, there was just one rare lapse, from Virat Kohli, who dropped a simple catch to give lifeline to Aniket Verma.
Talking about the ongoing match, at the time of writing this article, SRH are reduced to 192/9 after 19 overs.
