Jacob Duffy turned out to be a cheat code for defending champions RCB on his IPL debut as he induced a mini-collapse of SRH at the Chinnaswamay Stadium. His heroics were hailed by fans on social media with heartwarming messages.

RCB took on SRH at Bengaluru for the IPL 2026 inaugural game. The home side won the toss and opted to bowl first on a fresh deck. Bengaluru were missing Josh Hazlewood, as the star Australian pacer is yet to recover from an injury.

However, in his absence, an underrated name from New Zealand stole the show.

Jacob Duffy becomes a fan favourite on IPL debut

31-year-old pacer from New Zealand, Jacob Duffy, made his IPL debut against SRH on March 28 at Bengaluru. He grabbed the new ball for RCB and had a great start, leaking just 7 runs in the first over.

However, Duffy switched gears in the most unexpected fashion. In his very second over of the spell, Jacob Duffy sent the deadly duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head packing in a single over.

Both Abhishek and Head were deceived by the short balls and ended up throwing their wickets away.

But Jacob Duffy didn’t stop there. RCB captain Rajat Patidar trusted him with his third over, and he delivered by chipping the wicket of Nitish Reddy on just 1 run.

At 4.2 overs, SRH had three wickets down with just 29 runs on the board, and Duffy was praised heavily on social media. Many called him a perfect replacement for Josh Hazlewood and also shut down the haters.

Jacob Duffy - A RCB management masterclass

On his IPL debut, Jacob Duffy finished with a fantastic spell of 4-22-3. His acquisition was nothing short of a masterclass by RCB.

With uncertainty around Josh Hazlewood’s availability, the management, led by Andy Flower and Mo Bobat, focused on building depth rather than relying on a like-for-like replacement.

Special inputs also came in from captain Rajat Patidar, and RCB went for a bid for Jacob Duffy. Interestingly, by the time Duffy was up in the auction, most teams weren’t interested in him.

Hence, RCB acquired him at the base price of INR 2 crores, and in hindsight, it turned out to be a mega steal deal.

If Jacob Duffy continues to shine like this for RCB, he will turn out to be one of the biggest surprises of the IPL 2026 season.

RCB on top as SRH crumble under pressure

Defending champions RCB made an early impact after opting to bowl, reducing Sunrisers Hyderabad to 79/3 in 9 overs in the opening IPL 2026 clash.

The standout performer was Jacob Duffy, who struck three times to remove key batters, including Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Nitish Reddy, finishing his spell with impressive figures of 3/22.

Despite the early setbacks, Ishan Kishan kept Hyderabad in the contest with an aggressive unbeaten 35, while Heinrich Klaasen provided support at the other end.

RCB’s disciplined bowling, led by Duffy’s new-ball burst, ensured they maintained control through the powerplay and early middle overs.
