Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been the centre of attraction for his on-field activities in the ongoing tri-nation tournament, and every move he makes has been monitored not only by his teammates but by the opposition as well. His performance with the bat has been average, and the opponents have found ways to trap him.
He was involved in a heated altercation with the Sri Lankan players in the last match of the tri-series, and all eyes were on him once again as he stepped onto the field to take on the Afghanistan side in the do-or-die ODI match.
However, it seemed the Afghanistan bowlers were a bit charged up against the Indian opener, and after his dismissal, they gave him an animated send-off.
Sooryavanshi silenced by Afghanistan pacer with finger on lip gesture
Another India A game and another not-so-impressive performance by the 15-year-old Indian star. Afghanistan came up with a plan to rattle the opener as they delivered a barrage of bouncers, and clearly, Sooryavanshi was uncomfortable.
He scored 38 off 28 deliveries, but it was not the fluent Sooryanshi that the world had witnessed in the IPL, as one of the bouncers eventually did the trick for Afghanistan pacer, Faridoon Dawoodzai.
The tearaway pacer had tested the India A opener with his fiery bowling, and the southpaw miscued his attempted pull shot against him as the ball lobbed in the air and the fielder at covers took a simple catch.
However, from out of nowhere, Dawoodzai gave an animated send-off to the Indian batter as he silenced him with a “finger on the lip” gesture.
Why the Afghanistan batter gave a fiery send-off to Sooryavanshi
In the 3rd over of the India A innings, Sooryavanshi should have been out as the opener miscued a shot and Dawoodzai grabbed a catch. While the 15-year-old started to walk back, the umpires checked for a clean catch, but eventually the decision went in India’s favour as the fielder had not plucked the catch properly.

A couple of overs later, Dawoodzai bowled a brilliant delivery as Sooryavanshi once again failed to time the ball, but this time, his catch was dropped as another lifeline was given to him.
Hence, when the left-arm pacer finally dismissed him, the finger on the lip gesture was a sign of frustration as he believed the opener should have been dismissed early.
Sooryavanshi's poor run in tri-nation tournament
After an outstanding IPL 2026 season, where the Rajasthan Royals finished as the highest run-getter, the Indian selectors picked him in the senior squad for the UK tour, and also drafted him into the A side for the tri-series.
There was a ton of expectations from the 15-year-old star player, but soon, that expectation faded as Sooryavanshi failed to deliver the goods.
He scored 14 runs in the tournament opener against Sri Lanka A, and it was followed by a quickfire 44 against Afghanistan A. In the following match against Sri Lanka, he accumulated just 21 runs before returning with a score of 38 against Afghanistan.
In four matches, he registered just 117 runs, with an average of 29.25, and a strike rate of 153.95.
