Ravi Ashwin feels Sooryavanshi could make way for Ishan [Source: AFP]
India's latest batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already given fans plenty to celebrate, but former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the teenager's journey should be handled with care.
Following India's dominant chase in the third T20I against New Zealand, Ashwin has shared his thoughts on the youngster's future in the ongoing series.
His views also bring a possible change in India's opening combination into focus, with Ishan Kishan potentially returning to the side for the next match.
R Ashwin backs Samson to open if Ishan makes his comeback
Ravichandran Ashwin believes Sanju Samson should reclaim his opening position if Ishan Kishan becomes available for India's next T20I against New Zealand.
The former India spinner feels Samson has earned the opportunity to return to his preferred role, even if it means Vaibhav Sooryavanshi misses out on a place in the playing XI.
Sooryavanshi entered India's combination after Kishan sustained an injury, with Samson moving down to No. 3 in the previous match. However, the teenager struggled to make an impact in that position, managing just four runs off eight deliveries in the second T20I.
India then made another adjustment for the third match, bringing Sooryavanshi to the top of the order alongside Abhishek Sharma. The decision proved effective as the 15-year-old smashed 45 runs from just 19 balls, helping India chase down New Zealand's target of 199 with 6.4 overs remaining.
"In this combination, when Ishan Kishan is missing and Sooryavanshi has to come, that probably looks like the perfect order because Sanju has got the experience to be able to deal with going in at No. 3. However, tomorrow if Ishan Kishan is going to come back, I think Vaibhav heads out and Sanju slots right back into the slot he deserves," Ashwin said on SonyLIV.
Ashwin also praised Sooryavanshi's fearless batting, pointing out that the youngster has consistently demonstrated his attacking instincts, including during the IPL.
"The way Vaibhav Sooryavanshi just took off was something that he has done all IPL. For me, he is and will always be a very special player. I look forward to seeing him do very many special things in his career," he added.
Ashwin urges fans to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi time to develop
While Ravichandran Ashwin has backed Sooryavanshi to make way if India's regular combination is restored, his comments were not a criticism of the teenager's ability.
"These are all big statements to make so early in his life. I really hope that the young boy gets that breathing space. I know he is going to be the poster boy of Indian cricket at some stage, but we all need to take that backward step and allow him to enjoy his cricket," Ashwin said.
With Kishan's availability potentially influencing India's next selection, the team management could face a decision over its opening combination ahead of IND vs NZ 4th T20I match.
