Virat Kohli has been usurped by New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell in the ICC ODI rankings for batters. Suryakumar Yadav attained a major batting landmark in T20 cricket. In other news, former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the upcoming PSL 2026 season.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, January 21.

Suryakumar Yadav completes 9,000 T20 runs

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has completed 9,000 runs in his T20 career through the course of his 32-run knock against New Zealand in the first T20I of the series in Nagpur. In the process, the cricketer also became only the fourth Indian batter in history to breach the 9,000-run landmark figure, joining the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and former opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Moreover, Suryakumar Yadav became the third fastest Indian batter to complete 9,000 runs, doing so in just 321 T20 innings.

Virat Kohli loses number one ICC ranking to Daryl Mitchell

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has reclaimed the number one ICC ranking among ODI batters, snatching away the throne from Indian run machine Virat Kohli. Mitchell plundered successive match-winning hundreds for New Zealand earlier this month, as the ‘Black Caps’ secured a historic ODI series win on Indian soil.

Even though Virat Kohli himself punched out a majestic 124 in the series-decider, and a match-winning 93 in the first ODI, he slipped to the second spot on the rankings with 795 rating points. Daryl Mitchell is firmly placed at the top with 845 points, i.e., 50 clear of the second-placed Virat Kohli.

Faf du Plessis ruled out of PSL 2026 due to injury

Former South African captain Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the upcoming PSL 2026 season owing to an injury. The cricketer is yet to recover from the injury he sustained in South Africa earlier this month as JSK captain during the SA20 2025-26 season.

Late last year, Faf du Plessis had committed to playing PSL 2026 in Pakistan after opting himself out of the IPL 2026 auction. The legendary South African cricketer last played PSL back during the 2021 edition of the tournament for the Quetta Gladiators franchise.

ICC warns Bangladesh, replacement fixed for T20 World Cup 2026

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) one more day to decide whether the Bangladesh team will be travelling to India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup or not. If the BCB and the Bangladesh government sticks to their refusal citing security concerns, the ICC will replace the Bangladesh team with Scotland at the showpiece event next month.

The decision was taken by the ICC on Wednesday, January 21 during a board meeting, where it is understood that only the PCB voted in favour of Bangladesh out of all 15 directors present.

Webster’s Hurricanes storm into BBL 2025-26 challenger

Hobart Hurricanes pipped Melbourne Stars by three runs (DLS method) in the knockout match of the BBL 2025-26 season in Hobart. Batting first in a 10-overs-a-side game, Hurricanes mounted 114-5 courtesy of Beau Webster’s swift 26-ball 47. Defending 85 runs from seven overs in a rain-revised chase, Riley Meredith picked up two Melbourne Stars wickets to restrict Marcus Stoinis and co. to just 81-4 in response.

The Hobart Hurricanes will now face Sydney Sixers in the Challenger match for a place in the BBL 2025-26 final.
