Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir Seen Interacting Publicly For The 1st Time After Australia Tour

The Indian cricket team is in dire straits right now. Under new leadership, the ‘Men in Blue’ recently suffered successive T20I series defeats in Ireland and England. 

Moreover, even in the team’s ODI setup, several reports indicate that there is a rift between seasoned pro Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The situation seems so tense that it required batting coach Sitanshu Kotak to clear the air over the alleged rift.

It Kotak’s remarks were not reassuring enough, both Kohli and Gambhir have now been seen publicly and laughingly interacting with each other ahead of India’s upcoming series-decider against England.

On Sunday, July 19, the BCCI shared pictures of Team India visiting the High Commission in England. The players and support staff were invited by High Commissioner of India to the UK, Mr Kumaran Periasamy.

At one stage of the memorable evening in London, senior man Virat Kohli was even seen publicly interacting with Gambhir as the two shared laughs amid their rift rumours. The light-hearted exchange between the two quickly grabbed fans’ attention, with many viewing it as a sign that reports of a dressing-room rift may have been overblown.

The ocassion also marked the first instance of the two dynamic Indian personalities sharing a space in public since India's disastrious tour of Australia last year.

What led to Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir rift rumors

Several unseen and unconfirmed factors hinted a form of rift between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. Just last week, the two maintained radio silence with each other during a training session in England. 

The two also share a hostile history with each other, despite having played together for Delhi and for Team India during their early years. The two legendary Indian batters have had some verbal altercations in the IPL, before the they put their differences past them when Gambhir took over as India’s head coach in 2024.

Under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir and new captain Shreyas Iyer, Team India recently suffered back-to-back T20I series whitewashes in Ireland and England. After coping much criticism, coach Gambhir now has an opportunity to help India bounce back in the ODI leg of this European tour. 

Even Virat Kohli, who only plays ODI cricket for India, will be desperate to put some runs under his belt after his latest half-century went in vain in Cardiff. The legendary Indian batter will be aiming to put some match-winning runs on the board as his team takes on England in potentially his final international match in the country. 

With series locked 1-1, India and England will take on each other in the third ODI at the iconic Lord’s in London on Sunday, July 19. The action is slated to commence from 3:30 PM IST onwards.
