Team India thrashed New Zealand by 96 runs in the final to lift the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Defending 256 runs for a win, bowlers bundled out the ‘Black Caps’ for just 159 in 19 overs as Team India successfully defended its T20 World title.

Ace Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy finished the competition as its joint-highest wicket-taker alongside teammate Jasprit Bumrah. After the match, the 34-year-old shared a celebratory post on social media, where the cricketer can also be seen taking a dig at Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed.

Varun Chakaravarthy took to Instagram the following morning, i.e. on March 9, and shared several pictures from India’s post-match celebrations. In the viral post, the spinner can be seen posing with the trophy at the stadium, inside the dressing room and even in the hotel lobby.

In the final slide, Chakaravarthy is seen enjoying a cup of tea with one hand while holding the trophy close with the other, seemingly taking a brutal dig at his Pakistani rival Abrar Ahmed.

It is worth noting that Abrar, along with several other Pakistan players, has previously attempted to troll Indians with the “Tea is Fantastic” running gag. The phrase stems from the 2019 cross-border air skirmish between India and Pakistan, when Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was captured in hostile territory and was seen calmly sipping tea during his interrogation.

A campaign of two halves for Varun Chakaravarthy

Varun Chakaravarthy played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win, especially in the first half of the competition. The cricketer started off by picking up nine wickets in four Group A matches, which included three-wicket hauls against Namibia and Netherlands and a sensational match-winning spell in India’s 61-run win over Pakistan in Colombo.

However, in each of India’s next five matches of the tournament, the 34-year-old collected only five wickets and conceded runs at an expensive 11.84 runs an over. In any case, Chakaravarthy still concluded the 2026 T20 World Cup with 14 wickets from nine innings, the joint-highest with Jasprit Bumrah, at an overall bowling average of 20.50.

India scripts multiple historic firsts with win, Pakistan endure another exit

Team India secured a comprehensive 96-run win over New Zealand in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Batting first, the hosts mounted 255-5 in 20 overs courtesies of blistering half-centuries from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan and another cracking cameo from Shivam Dube.

In response, Varun Chakaravarthy got the big wicket of a well-set Tim Seifert and his teammates Jasprit Bumrah (4-15) and Axar Patel (3-27) picked up seven wickets between them to bundle out the 'Black Caps' for just 159.

With the win, Team India became the first side in history to go back-to-back in T20 World Cups, and also the first team to win three T20 World titles. Moreover, Suryakumar Yadav and co. also helped India become the first nation to lift the coveted T20 silverware on home soil.

The Pakistan cricket team, with all their pre-match antics and over-the-top celebrations, bowed out of the competition before the semifinals.
