Tamim Iqbal’s rapid ascent in Bangladesh cricket administration has placed him at the heart of a growing tug-of-war between Dhaka and cricket’s global power centre.
Bangladesh’s decision to withdraw from the 2026 T20 World Cup sent shockwaves across the world. With a new government in Dhaka, the interim BCB president Tamim Iqbal has now broken his silence.
In a candid conversation with Sriram Veera of The Indian Express, he offered his sharpest public criticism yet of the episode, signalling that the wounds are far from healed.
The BCB-ICC Fallout That Led to Withdrawal
The controversy ignited when Bangladesh requested a venue change for their T20 World Cup matches, from India to Sri Lanka. The ICC cited logistical constraints and turned down the plea.
Faced with no alternative, the previous BCB administration pulled the team out of the tournament entirely. Scotland was swiftly named as the replacement, and the cricketing world was stunned.
Behind the scenes, disagreements grew within the BCB and between the board and the ICC. Political undercurrents, safety concerns and logistical puzzles were all mentioned as factors in the pull-out.

An Official Inquiry and Habibul Bashar’s Role
The drama did not end with the withdrawal. Bangladesh’s National Sports Council (NSC) has now formed an official committee to investigate the entire episode.
Chief selector and former captain Habibul Bashar finds himself in the unusual position of being a key member of that inquiry.
Led by AKM Oli Ullah, additional secretary of the youth and sports ministry, the panel also includes Supreme Court lawyer and sports organiser Barrister Faisal Dostagir.
Tamim Iqbal Blames Both BCB and ICC For The World Cup Drama
Against this backdrop, Tamim Iqbal chose his words carefully but pointedly. Without naming individuals, he slammed his frustration at the previous board’s handling of the crisis.
“I was probably the first to speak out when the (T20) World Cup issue happened. What was done, how it was handled by the previous Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) administration, was not right. The ICC was lenient; there was room to find a solution. We should have found it,” Iqbal said.
Iqbal’s statement turns the narrative on its head. Rather than portraying the ICC as an inflexible giant that forced Bangladesh’s hand, Tamim suggests the global body was open to compromise.
The real failure, in his view, was the inability of Bangladesh’s own cricket leadership to seize that opening.
What Tamim’s Words Signal for the Future
The inquiry led by AKM Oli Ullah and featuring Habibul Bashar will soon bring its findings. Depending on what emerges, positions could come under threat, and the way Bangladesh negotiates future tournaments may change massively.
For a cricket board still rebuilding its international image, his readiness to admit fault may open doors with the ICC and might even strengthen relation with India with bilateral series on the horizon.
