In a significant development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday strongly denied claims made by sections of the Indian media that it had contacted the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the India–Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup

According to the PCB, these reports are completely false and misleading. The board made it clear that it had not taken any step to formally approach the ICC on this matter, despite widespread speculation.

Importance of India vs Pakistan matches

Any cricket match between India and Pakistan is considered one of the biggest attractions in the sport. Such clashes generate millions of dollars through television rights, sponsorship deals, and advertising revenue. Therefore, uncertainty around this fixture has raised serious concerns for cricket authorities, broadcasters, and fans alike.

However, the situation became complicated after Pakistan’s federal government instructed the team not to play the match against India in Colombo.

Notably, Indian media claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the PCB had already reached out to the ICC for talks after receiving a reply from the global cricket body.

They also suggested that the ICC was interested in settling the matter through discussion rather than taking a confrontational approach.

In addition, a report by AFP stated that the PCB had indeed reached out to the ICC following official communication from the council.

PCB’s strong rebuttal on these claims

Responding to these claims, PCB spokesperson Amir Mir firmly rejected the narrative. He said,

“I categorically reject the claim by Indian sports journalist Vikrant Gupta that the PCB approached the ICC,” spokesperson, Amir Mir was quoted as saying in the post.

“As usual, sections of the Indian media are busy circulating fiction. A little patience and time will clearly show who actually went knocking and who didn’t,” PCB spokesperson Mir further added in the post.

T20 World Cup 2026 under uncertainty

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, now faces renewed uncertainty. Since India vs Pakistan match is the biggest commercial draw of the tournament, Pakistan’s refusal could force the ICC to reconsider match points or scheduling options.

Although Pakistan have chosen not to play against India, they has decided to participate in the rest of the tournament. However, the ICC stated that selective participation is difficult to justify, as all qualified teams are expected to compete equally. The council also mentioned that it is still waiting for official communication from the PCB.

It is important to note that Pakistan, which began their campaign with a close win over the Netherlands, risks losing two valuable points if the India match is forfeited. This could also negatively affect their net run rate.

On the other hand, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed earlier that the Indian team would travel to Colombo as scheduled. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated India–Pakistan match is scheduled to take place at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, February 15.
