West Indies legend Viv Richards has always stood in the front row when it comes to cricket’s greatest icons. Praise from the legends is always delightful, and Team India’s T20I side earned praise from the West Indies legend Viv Richards just after the T20 World Cup triumph.

Beating New Zealand in the high-voltage final match of the T20 World Cup 2026, they lifted the prestigious trophy for the third time. While reflecting on Team India’s greatness, the Caribbean legend hailed the Men in Blue’s dominance in the shortest format.

Viv Richards hails Team India’s T20I supremacy

Over the years, Team India has been one of the biggest powerhouses of the cricket world, growing stronger with time. After winning the T20 World Cup 2024, the Men in Blue created history by successfully defending the title in the recently concluded edition. Just not the recent heroics, the Men in Blue have showcased their dominance, especially in the shortest format over time.

Since the game of cricket was invented, West Indies cricket gifted some of the greatest icons, and Viv Richards is one of them. During his glorious career, he captivated fans with his brilliance and created many unforgettable moments. Now, the Caribbean legend has showered immense praises on the Men in Blue.

Speaking to PTI, he hailed Team India’s brilliance in the limited-over cricket. As Suryakumar Yadav and Co. just lifted the prestigious T20 World Cup trophy, Viv Richards said the triumph was a perfect gift for the fans who support the team wholeheartedly.

“India have taken the game, in my opinion, to a different level, more so in the limited overs. It is a great present for the fans because of the love and the passion that they show for the game in itself. I just think the result would have been the right result because of that love and passion and the country that it is played in,” he said.

Viv Richards compares India’s dominance to West Indies’ golden era

In the 1970s and 80s, they were the most feared force in world cricket, with opponents often intimidated by their dominance. When the limited-over World Cup was introduced, the Caribbean were the maiden champions and successfully defended the title in the following edition.

Team India has recreated the same fate after lifting the recent T20 World Cup 2026 trophy. While hailing Men in Blue’s recent dominance, Viv Richards remembered the early dominance of the West Indies in limited-over cricket.

“We won the very first World Cup in 1975 and next one in 1979. So, cricket had a huge part to play where we are as West Indians. And more so, the folks who would have been fans of the West Indies teams of the past certainly will remember some of the great times that we had,” Richards said.

Suryakumar Yadav carries forward Rohit Sharma’s legacy

After winning the inaugural T20 World Cup trophy in 2007, Team India waited for years to live in the glory again. But the jinx was broken in the T20 World Cup 2024 when the Men in Blue lifted their second trophy under Rohit Sharma’s leadership in Caribbean soil. Just after the triumph, India’s T20I captaincy baton passed on to Suryakumar Yadav.

Before Team India stepped into the T20 World Cup 2026, the expectations were high, and captain SKY kept Rohit Sharma’s legacy alive. Starting the group stage with pure dominance, they must have stumbled in the group stage but bounced back most fiercely.

Clearing the semifinal stage with excellence, they faced New Zealand as the final competitor and outplayed them with dominance. With an outstanding 96-run victory, they successfully defended the title, creating a historic moment in cricket. With this triumph, India also became the first team to win the trophy three times.
