Stephen Fleming has made a notable statement after being appointed England’s new Test coach. He believes the team should eventually be led by an Englishman rather than an overseas coach.

The New Zealander will begin work in December in the England tour of South Africa, but developing homegrown coaching talent is already a key goal as he prepares to lead England’s Test team in the years ahead.

Stephen Fleming Believes England Should Have An English Test Coach

Stephen Fleming was appointed England’s Test coach in July and will begin his tenure with the three-match Test series in South Africa, starting on December 17. He will replace Brendon McCullum, who remains in charge of England’s white-ball sides.

The 53-year-old has just begun his tenure as England’s Test head coach, but he has already expressed his belief that the team should be led by an Englishman.

“I do believe that primarily the national team should be coached by a national representative,” Fleming said to BBC Radio 5 Live.

England have had very few English coaches in charge of their Test team over the past 25 years. Since 1999, only Peter Moores and Chris Silverwood have held the position, with Moores having two separate spells.

Instead, England have often relied on overseas coaches, including Duncan Fletcher, Andy Flower, Trevor Bayliss and Brendon McCullum. Fleming is the latest foreign appointment, but he also wants to help develop English coaching talent for the future.

Fleming Wants To Develop English Coaches And Involve Former Players

Stephen Fleming further shed light on his plans to develop English coaching talent, stressing the importance of giving local coaches opportunities to work with the national team and gain valuable experience at the highest level.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity, but there will be some development in terms of the coaching, and you can see by our staff,” Fleming added.

Marcus Trescothick, who served as interim Test coach during England’s series against Pakistan earlier this year, is part of Fleming’s coaching staff alongside former wicketkeeper James Foster and ex-spinner Richard Dawson.

Former England batter Jonathan Trott was also recently appointed England Lions head coach, while Fleming also plans to involve county coaches with the senior team during his tenure to help them learn and develop further.
