Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to play in IND vs NZ 2nd T20I [PC- AFP]
The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was on the bench during the first T20I against New Zealand, but Ishan Kishan's groin injury has opened the door for the young batting prodigy.
Whenever Sooryavanshi goes, he gets extensive attention, but the team management wants to take care of him, as revealed by the Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on the eve of IND vs NZ 2nd T20I.
Sitanshu Kotak calls hype around Sooryavanshi 'bad'
Ahead of the second T20I between India and New Zealand at Christchurch, Sitanshu Kotak praised the way the Gautam Gambhir-led team management are handling Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
"He is young, but the way the entire team management handles him is amazing. I observe this neutrally. The public and social media love him because of his talent, and the team loves him too," the batting coach told media.
Kotak said too much hype around a teenager is not good for him, especially when he's not getting a spot in the playing 11.
"In the beginning, I felt there was a lot of hype suggesting 'he must play, he must play.' I genuinely felt that much hype is not good for a young player. For a 15 or 16-year-old boy, hearing everyone say he must play and then not getting a spot can be tough on his mind," he added.
Furthermore, the batting coach said playing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the two openers would be unfair to them, as they have been performing consistently.
"It is also unfair to other openers who are performing well when an environment is created questioning why they are playing instead."
India need to solve couple of problems before IND vs NZ 2nd T20I
Team India will need to solve a riddle ahead of the IND vs NZ second T20I. The numero uno T20I batter, Ishan Kishan, is ruled out of the upcoming fixture due to a groin injury. The southpaw batted at number 5 in the previous match.
Both Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma looked in audacious touch the other night, but one of them will be asked to bat at number 3 to accommodate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at the top of the order.
Although the team achieved the highest team target in Christchurch on Thursday, the bowling unit turned out to be a huge headache for Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The second T20I between India and New Zealand will be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on Saturday evening.
