India young opener Shubman Gill is on the verge of creating history in the latest ICC ODI rankings released on Wednesday, July 22. The right-handed batter is just one rating point behind New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell in the race to become the No. 1 ODI batter in the world.

Notably, Shubman Gill currently has 801 rating points, while Mitchell sits at the top with 802 points.

Shubman Gill Set To Create History

It is important to note that if Shubman Gill climbs to the top in the next ICC ODI rankings update, he is set to become the youngest Indian captain to achieve the no 1 spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings.

Notably, only a handful of Indian cricketers have reached the summit of the ODI batting rankings. The elite list includes Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, who has previously held the top spot.

The Indian captain climbed closer to the summit after an impressive performance in the recently concluded ODI series against England. He finished as India's highest run-scorer, scoring 188 runs in three innings at an outstanding average of 94.00.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Maintain Their Positions in Latest ICC ODI Rankings

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retained their No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, following strong performances in the same series.

It is worth mentioning that Virat Kohli, who has 767 rating points, scored 144 runs, while Rohit Sharma amassed 175 runs, including a brilliant century in the third ODI against England at Lord's on Sunday.

On the other hand, England star Joe Root has also been rewarded for his outstanding performances in the series.

Notably, Joe Root remained unbeaten throughout the three-match contest, scoring 249 runs without being dismissed. As a result, the right-handed batter climbed four places to no 8 in the latest ODI rankings.
