After the embarrassing UK tour, the focus has now shifted to Zimbabwe. The Men in Blue will play a three-match T20I series starting on July 23. Shreyas Iyer will lead the side and is eyeing his first win as India captain.

Shreyas Iyer has led India in 7 T20Is and is yet to see a win. The 2026 T20 World Cup winners suffered a 0-2 defeat against Ireland, followed by a 0-4 defeat against England. The Men in Blue have named a strong side with VVS Laxman as the new head coach for this particular series.

India vs Zimbabwe: 1st T20I Preview

Zimbabwe released their T20I squad just 24 hours before the 1st T20I and have named a strong squad led by Sikandar Raza.

India, on the other hand, have a mixed squad. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma are there, but all eyes will be on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is expected to be a part of the playing XI.

Amid the curiosity, this article will shed light on India’s predicted playing XI for the 1st T20I against Zimbabwe.

India Likely Playing XI vs Zimbabwe- 1st T20I

Openers and Top Order (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan)

India don’t have Sanju Samson in the squad, which means that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will open the innings with Abhishek Sharma. Notably, the 15-year-old made his India debut against England in the 2nd T20I.

The RR opener couldn’t replicate his IPL heroics and was dropped from the team after scoring 42 runs in 3 innings, averaging just 14. Now, the prodigy is expected to be given all three matches, which means that Prabhsimran Singh will have to wait for his chance.

Ishan Kishan, who didn’t have a great T20I series against Ireland and England, will continue to bat at No.3 because he is the No. 1-ranked T20I batter and one bad series shouldn’t be enough to throw him out of the playing XI.

Middle Order and All Rounders (Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh,Shivam Dube)

In the middle-order, Shreyas Iyer will lead the side and also bat at No.4. Meanwhile, vice-captain Tilak Varma will bat at No.5, despite criticism over his slow strike-rate.

Rest, Rinku Singh has a make-or-break situation in the Zimbabwe series. The KKR vice-captain will bat at No.6. India might go ahead with just one all-rounder. The option is between Shivam Dube and Suryansh Shedge, but the team might prefer the CSK star over the Punjab Kings’ all-rounder.

Bowlers (Prince Yadav, Ashok Sharma, Ravi Bishnoi, Yash Thakur)

Among the bowlers, unlike the England series, where only three proper bowlers were used in the playing XI, India will go ahead with four proper bowling options. Notably, Prince Yadav will lead the pace attack, while Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur will most likely be handed their India debut.

In the spin department, Ravi Bishnoi will be the sole spinner. The RR spinner is not enjoying the best of times, but the Zimbabwe series can be the one where he bounces back to his best.
