The rumours surrounding Shreyas Iyer becoming India's next T20I captain after Suryakumar Yadav have been gaining momentum.

Shreyas Iyer, who last played an international match in December 2023 against Australia, was recently seen in a concerning state during a Mumbai T20 League match for his team, SoBo Mumbai Falcons.

Shreyas Iyer Hit With Injury?

Leading South Bombay in their inaugural clash on June 2 at the Wankhede Stadium, Shreyas Iyer was spotted stretching his hamstrings and legs while lying on the ground in the middle of the match.

The visuals raised concerns among fans, considering Iyer's injury-marred journey in recent years. Any fresh injury concern could become another hurdle in his potential bid to take over India's T20I captaincy.

Iyer And His Long Injury-Marred Days

Over the years, Iyer has suffered several injury setbacks. He dislocated his left shoulder in March 2021, sustaining a severe labrum tear while diving during an ODI between India and England.

In 2022 and 2023, he struggled with a bulging disc that compressed a nerve and caused severe pain extending down to his toe. Despite taking multiple injections, he eventually underwent back surgery in London in April 2023.

In early 2024, Iyer reportedly complained of back spasms during the Test series against England and also experienced discomfort during the Ranji Trophy final.

His latest injury concern was a lacerated spleen suffered while diving for a catch during the third ODI between India and Australia in Sydney. These injuries have kept him out of action for significant periods during his international career.

Now, as reports continue to link Shreyas with the Indian T20I captaincy, fresh concerns over his fitness are unlikely to help his case.

Shreyas Iyer To Become India’s Next T20I Captain

According to recent reports, Iyer, who has led three different IPL franchises to the final, is being considered as India's next T20I captain.

While Suryakumar Yadav's leadership record has been impressive, his batting performances have not met expectations of late. As a result, he could be replaced as captain.

Meanwhile, a report from Dainik Jagran claims that Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma is being considered as India's next vice-captain, potentially replacing spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel.

Shreyas Iyer’s Concerning Video Goes Viral

However, there have been no official reports suggesting that Shreyas has suffered any fresh injury.

During the Arcs Andheri vs SoBo Mumbai Falcons match, Iyer was seen lying on the ground after the 13.3-over mark of Andheri's innings as the latter reviewed an umpiring decision.

He appeared to be stretching his right leg, with visible discomfort on his face. He stretched, rolled, and relaxed his right hamstring and glute muscles, seemingly trying to ease tension and discomfort.

Nevertheless, there was no indication that the issue prevented him from continuing. Iyer later batted in the match, although he managed only five runs from seven deliveries as captain.

SoBo Mumbai Falcons posted a modest total of 126, which ARCS Andheri chased down comfortably inside 14 overs.

What Would Iyer’s Injury Mean?

If Iyer is indeed carrying an injury, it could spark fresh speculation regarding India's captaincy plans.

Should Shreyas Iyer suffer any significant fitness setback in the future, players such as Sanju Samson or even Suryakumar Yadav could remain in contention for India's T20I captaincy.

For now, however, there is no official confirmation of any injury concern surrounding the Mumbai batter.
