Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings to a comprehensive win against LSG in match number 29 of the IPL 2026 season on April 19. The outcome ensures that the Punjab Kings franchise remains the only unbeaten team so far in the ongoing tournament.

Iyer’s recent captaincy success with the Punjab Kings has now reportedly put him on Team India leadership radar among the selectors, with RCB skipper Rajat Patidar simultaneously being eyed for the exclusive spot.

Amid rising reports of leading the Indian national XI, Shreyas Iyer recently heaped an extravagant praise on Rajasthan Royals opener and Indian wonder kid, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. It is worth noting that Sooryavanshi himself is among the few young IPL stars currently eyed for a Team India debut this year.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has expressed his admirations for young Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The senior Indian batter even predicted the 15-year-old to become a future Team India superstar.

Iyer said “He is a spectacular talent, and all the adjectives would be pretty less for him. The way he has that bat flow, the rhythm and momentum he creates before the delivery — I think he is one for the future.”

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi enjoys dream run

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his IPL debut last year for the Rajasthan Royals at a tender age of 14, thus becoming the youngest cricketer in the history of the tournament to do so. The blistering left-handed opener also impressed one-and-all during India’s several Under-19 tours, and at the junior Asia Cup in 2025.

Shortly after hammering down a record 84-ball 190 for Bihar in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, the youngster blazed the India U19 team to 2026 U19 World Cup glory in Zimbabwe. In the final, the dynamic top-order batter blasted 175 off just 80 balls against England U19.

As of now, the 15-year-old has notched up 246 runs in six innings of the IPL 2026 season so far for the Rajasthan Royals. The cricketer has maintained an average of 41 and a staggering strike rate of 236.53 in the process.

Both Shreyas Iyer, Sooryavanshi likely to play for India together

According to reports, the likes of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya are being fast-tracked to India’s T20I setup owing to their prolific run in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shashank Singh and Anukul Roy among others are also being considered by the BCCI.

Moreover, there is a strong buzz that either Shreyas Iyer or Rajat Patidar will be appointed to lead a second-string Indian side following the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season

The Indian team is set to play four series in two windows, which includes matches against Ireland and Afghanistan in June and July and a series against West Indies and the Asian Games in September.

With multiple emerging stars and proven performers in the mix, the BCCI’s evolving approach reflects a clear intent to build formidable bench strength while ensuring sustained competitiveness in the game’s shortest format.
