After two defeats in three days in PSL 2026, Shaheen Afridi’s Lahore Qalandars made a significant move to bolster their squad to replace their Bangladesh star. The decision opened the door for Sri Lanka's ODI captain Charith Asalanka, who will now get an opportunity to showcase his talent in Pakistan’s elite T20 competition.

Lahore Qalandars secured the services of Bangladesh’s 23-year-old opener Parvez Hossain Emon for PKR60 lakh during the second phase of the inaugural PSL auction. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury ruled him out of the entire tournament.

Having moved to sixth on the PSL points table, Shaheen Afridi’s Lahore Qalandars had no option but to do something in order to turn the tide. Hence, they acquired the services of Charith Asalanka, who can be handy in Lahore’s middle order, as well as be handy with the ball.

This will be Asalanka’s first major T20 competition apart from the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Lanka Premier League (LPL), and the ILT20. There, he played for Mumbai Indians (MI), Jaffna Kings, Kandy Warriors, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Chennai Braves.

Asalanka is currently Sri Lanka’s captain in the 50-over format, having taken the responsibility from Kusal Mendis since July 2024. Mendis, meanwhile, is currently enjoying the best form of his life, playing for Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi.

Asalanka has played 159 T20s for different teams in different countries. He averages 22.88 for 3113 runs, striking at 127.52. In the shortest format of the game, he picked up 30 wickets.

For Sri Lanka, Asalanka’s T20 record is not so great. Overall, the 28-year-old has made 1456 thus far, striking at 125.95.

What Happened To Parvez Hossain Emon?

Bangladesh’s Parvez Hossain Emon tore his ligament after an unfortunate on-field collision with Asif Ali during Lahore Qalandars’ PSL 2026 match against Multan Sultans.

Shaheen Afridi’s Lahore Qalandars confirmed yesterday that he will not take part any longer in the competition, and the franchise on Sunday announced the replacement within 24 hours.

Of course, Asalanka had to get the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to participate in the PSL 2026.
