The Scotland cricket team took on Canada in their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match on Friday, August 7. The Forthill in Dundee hosted the match, where Canada won the toss and opted to field first. 

The match also marked a historic occasion for ODI cricket, considering the prestigious limited-overs format has now reached the milestone of 5,000 matches.

ODI cricket completes 5,000 matches

The Scotland vs Canada match, which also happens to be match number 123 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, became the 5,000th ODI match in the history of the format. The breakthrough moment occurred when both Scotland and Canada captains arrived to the pitch for a toss before the game.

The milestone highlights the enduring legacy and global popularity of the 50-over format over the past five decades.

Over the years, the format has remained one of the cornerstones of international cricket, bridging the gap between Test cricket and T20Is.

History of ODI cricket

The first-ever ODI was played back in 1971 with a match between Ashes rivals Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). At the time, ODI matches featured 60-overs-a-side innings. 

Moreover, the first three editions of the ICC ODI World Cup between 1975 and 1983 were all 60-overs event, before 50-overs matches made their World Cup debut in 1987. 

It took about 24 years since ODI cricket’s inception to complete its first 1,000 matches, reaching the milestone figure in 1995. However, it took only another 23 years to quadruple that figure, with ODIs completing 4,000 games in 2018.

Despite the rise of T20I bilateral series and with T20 franchise leagues taking up most of the calendar year, ODI cricket maintained its steady progression to reach 5,000 matches in August 2026.
