Sarfaraz Khan has not been considered in the Indian playing XI for exactly two years. The domestic run machine last featured in the national XI way back in November 2024 during India’s home Test series against New Zealand.
While the 29-year-old was named in India squad for the two-match tour of Sri Lanka a couple of months ago, he failed to receive an opportunity in the playing XI. On a trail of repeated exclusions from Team India, the Mumbai middle-order batter recently got emotional while interacting with the reporters.
Sarfaraz Khan says his father his only support in life
While speaking with the reporters at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium on Monday, November 2, an emotional Sarfaraz Khan claimed that he has not had any support in his life except that of his father, Naushad Khan.
The 29-year-old added that while he has scored big hundreds in domestic cricket, the journey of finding a place in the Indian playing XI has not been easy for him.
He said, “Everyone knows I don’t have support in life. If anyone has supported me, it’s my father. Nobody else. I worked hard and fulfilled my father’s dream. I have scored big hundreds to get there. It is not easy to play for India in today’s generation.”
Sarfaraz says he is ready to play for India A and Mumbai to prove himself
Sarfaraz Khan further stated that he was not expecting a call from the national selectors to tour Sri Lanka a couple of months ago. While he failed to find a place in the playing XI in each of the two Tests of the tour, the cricketer returned to India and is currently playing for Mumbai in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season.
Khan explained that he is ready to play for Team India, and will even play for India A and Mumbai teams in a bid to prove himself to the national selectors.
He said, “I didn’t even know I would get a call for the Sri Lanka tour. Then, I came back to play for Mumbai. I am not able to understand anything (about the future). Whenever and wherever I get a chance to play, I will play - whether it is India or India A or Mumbai.”
Sarfaraz Khan was recently excluded from Team India squad for their upcoming two-match tour of New Zealand. Moreover, the domestic run machine also did not receive any call for India A matches in the country this month.
As per statistics, Sarfaraz is one of the most proficient run-scorers in Indian domestic cricket at the moment. The prolific middle-order batter has already plundered 5,354 runs in 97 innings spanning 66 first-class matches at an average of 70.30 with 18 tons and 16 fifties.
As of now, it remains to be seen when can Sarfaraz Khan win back the selector’s trust and be included in India’s Test squads for future tours and series.
