The Hundred, an exclusive cricket competition hosted by England since its launch in 2021, is now undergoing a major transformation. The tournament is increasingly seeing a takeover by India’s multi-millionaire business groups, many of whom are already stakeholders in Indian Premier League franchises.

In the latest development, the Manchester Originals, a Hundred franchise, have been officially renamed Manchester Super Giants following a major acquisition by Indian billionaire Sanjeev Goenka and his RPSG Group.

Foundation of Manchester Originals in The Hundred

Since the team’s foundation in 2019, Manchester Originals had represented Lancashire in the newly created 100-ball competition. The franchise played its home matches at Old Trafford and featured in the inaugural 2021 season of The Hundred.

However, after three seasons, a major structural change came into effect in 2024 when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to privatise the tournament.

How Sanjiv Goenka group acquired Manchester Super Giants

As part of the privatisation model, the ECB offered a 51% stake to host counties and auctioned the remaining 49% to private investors. In February 2025, the RPSG Group, owners of the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, acquired a significant stake in the franchise.

Reports suggested that the group paid between £80 million and £107 million to secure a 70% stake. The RPSG Group also owns the Durban Super Giants in the SA20 league and the Mohun Bagan Super Giants football club.

The new identity of Manchester Originals

In August 2025, Sanjeev Goenka confirmed in an interview that the franchise would be rebranded under the “Super Giants” name.

That announcement became official on January 15, 2026, when the franchise revealed its new identity as Manchester Super Giants through a social media video shared by Goenka on his official account.

The rebranding marked the formal introduction of the Manchester Super Giants, who unveiled a new logo featuring an elephant head as the central symbol, topped with a crown. The “Manchester Super Giants” text is flanked by two golden wings, aligning with the branding seen across other RPSG-owned teams.

The disappointing Hundred 2025 season of Manchester

On the field, the franchise endured a disappointing 2025 season. Led by Phil Salt and featuring high-profile players such as Jos Buttler, the team struggled to find consistency.

Despite having a strong squad that included Heinrich Klaasen, Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, James Anderson, Ish Sodhi, and Noor Ahmed, the side managed only three wins from eight group-stage matches. They finished sixth on the points table and failed to qualify for the knockout stage.

The Hundred has been dominated in recent years by Oval Invincibles, who won the title in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Trent Rockets claimed the trophy in 2022, while Northern Brave emerged champions in the inaugural 2021 season.

With the new rebranding and the possibility of a refreshed core group, the Manchester Super Giants will be hoping for a fresh start and a renewed approach in the upcoming edition of The Hundred.
