Notably, it hasn’t been the first instance when Rohit Sharma has been mobbed by the fans in Mumbai. Rohit to make record-equalling IPL appearance for Mumbai Indians
With his first appearance in the upcoming IPL 2026, Rohit will join the likes of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni to become the player to play in the most IPL seasons. It will be the 19th consecutive IPL season for Rohit, alongside Kohli and Dhoni, who have appeared for the same number of seasons. Till now, all the three IPL legends have appeared in 18 successive IPL seasons each.
Besides that, Rohit is the only player for the Mumbai Indians in IPL history to feature in the most number of IPL editions. He has played 15 seasons, the most for MI.
Speaking of his glorious IPL career, Rohit is the second leading run-scorer of all time in the tournament’s history. He has scored 7046 runs in 267 innings at an average of 29.73 and a strike rate of 132.09. The 38-year-old has also scored two centuries and 47 half-centuries.
Apart from his brilliant batting credentials, Rohit has been the joint-most successful captain in the IPL history. During his captaincy, he led the Mumbai Indians to win five historic IPL titles.

The conundrum remains around Rohit Sharma’s role in MI for IPL 2026
What seems more confusing for the Mumbai Indians fans is that there are many speculations about the Hitman’s role in the team for IPL 2026. Notably, Rohit being used as an impact player in the previous edition didn’t sit well with many fans, former cricketers, and experts of the game.
Now, a few media reports also suggest that Rohit is not very keen to play as an impact player and will be eyeing a place in MI's playing XI during IPL 2026. The same possibility is also underscored by the hard work Rohit has done on his fitness in the last couple of months.
In the case of Rohit playing as a proper playing XI member in IPL 2026, it will be a tactical headache for the Mumbai Indians camp to choose an impact player among the youngsters. It will also become crucial for them in the all-important games, given the question of clarity around the role and impact potential of the players.
