Lucknow Super Giants suffered a horrendous defeat in IPL 2026 at the hands of Delhi Capitals at their home ground, Ekana Cricket Stadium, on Wednesday. 

Lucknow's defeat was not taken lightly by franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka, who was seen reprimanding captain Rishabh Pant openly on the field after the match.

Rishabh Pant himself had a poor outing with the bat, where he scored only 7 runs from 9 deliveries, contributing to LSG's 141 on the board.

While the target LSG put up seemed enough for Delhi Capitals at the beginning of their innings, Sameer Rizvi's 47-ball 70 and Tristan Stubbs' grit helped Delhi win the IPL match by 6 wickets. This infuriated Sanjiv Goenka.

Goenka Reprimands Pant In Public After IPL Defeat

Infamously known for his animated chat with ex-captain KL Rahul, Goenka was again seen recreating a similar moment with current skipper Pant. 

After the match, the Lucknow Super Giants skipper, along with head coach Justin Langer, was seen in discussion with the owner on the field following the defeat.

Visuals of Goenka in conversation with Pant were broadcast, where the audio was not available. However, the exchange between the individuals appeared animated.

The footage showed Sanjiv Goenka pointing fingers at Rishabh Pant and speaking intensely to coach Langer, while Pant was explaining himself to both of them. The video quickly went viral, given Goenka’s history of the infamous chat between him and KL Rahul.

The Infamous Goenka-Rahul Video That Went Viral

The infamous public exchange between Rahul and Sanjiv Goenka previously occurred on May 8, 2024, following LSG's crushing 10-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

After that IPL match, much like this incident, Goenka was captured engaging in an animated and visibly frustrated discussion with Rahul on the boundary line. Reports suggested that he was particularly unhappy with KL Rahul's strike rate on a flat pitch.

While the incident reportedly affected team chemistry and drew public backlash, the Goenka-Rishabh Pant video, now circulating online, reflects a similar scenario where Pant’s performance might also have upset Goenka.

Following that controversy, KL Rahul was not retained by Lucknow Super Giants for the 2025 season and moved to Delhi Capitals, reportedly seeking ‘a fresh start’.

LSG Suffers Unexpected Defeat At Home

Nevertheless, the defeat that frustrated Sanjiv Goenka and Langer was unexpected from Lucknow. With the bat, Mitchell Marsh and Abdul Samad contributed the bulk of LSG's innings, helping them reach 141 before being bowled out in 18.4 overs.

Delhi Capitals, while chasing, had a poor start. KL Rahul was dismissed for a golden duck by Mohammed Shami, while Pathum Nissanka, the other opener, was also out for just 1 run. Nitish Rana was also disappointed with his 15-run knock, as Delhi struggled at 26 for 4 in 4.3 overs.

However, it was impact player Sameer Rizvi who turned the game with a 47-ball 70, alongside Tristan Stubbs, as the duo stitched a match-winning partnership to guide the chase comfortably.

Delhi eventually finished the game in 17.1 overs with six wickets in hand. With the ball, only Prince Yadav and Mohammed Shami impressed, while the rest of Rishabh Pant’s men, namely Shahbaz Ahmed, Anrich Nortje, and Mohsin Khan, struggled and leaked runs in their inaugural IPL 2026 clash.
