In a significant development, the much-anticipated IPL 2026 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) got interrupted due to persistent rain at Eden Gardens.

After Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first, KKR were 25/2 in 3.4 overs, losing two hard-hitting overseas players Finn Allen and Cameron Green early in the innings.

Thanks to the Purple and Gold Brigade, rain came at Eden Gardens, and forced to interrupt the game. Punjab Kings, on the other hand, would not too be pleased with the interruption, as they were in control against Shreyas Iyer's former IPL franchise.

Ever since Shreyas Iyer helped KKR win the IPL title in 2024 and joined Punjab Kings in the following year, the KKR vs PBKS IPL 2026 Match often takes all the limelight. Unfortunately, for fans, the match was delayed, as the covers came immediately after 3.4 overs of KKR’s innings.

KKR Field XI Without Sunil Narine & Varun Chakaravarthy

Earlier, KKR fans were in disarray to see two of their most reliable performers – Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy – out of their playing XI against Punjab Kings.

They already had injury setbacks before, with Matheesha Pathirana, Harshit Rana and Akash Deep not available for IPL 2026.

While Harshit Rana and Akash Deep have been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026, Matheesha Pathirana is yet to receive an NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

Hence, not having pacers, coupled with two more injury setbacks in Varun and Narine made the KKR attack look harmless, at least on paper.

To make matters worse, Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first, leaving fans confused. Usually, whenever there is a rain forecast, teams opt to field first to keep the revised playing conditions in mind.

Yet, Rahane chose the different path.
