Rohit Sharma with Virat Kohli during IND vs SA ODIs | PC- AFP
Team India are going through a transition in the longest format, with three of their biggest match-winners, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin and Rohit Sharma, retired from Tests. Although the batters are still very much part of the ODI team, Ashwin has completely hung up his boots from the international cricket.
Having turned into a coach-pundit, Ashwin plays very little cricket in overseas leagues while fully concentrating on his YouTube channel.
Recently, the legendary off-spinner has made a massive revelation about the near future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
R Ashwin drops hint on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli retirement plans
While speaking about the lives after total retirement for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin dropped the biggest hint.
According to the former spinner, Rohit may get associated with the Mumbai Indians as backroom staff after his playing days. However, he remained unsure what Kohli would do in his second innings.
“I don’t think Virat will be ready to coach. Both have done a lot. Maybe Rohit Sharma can be seen in some capacity in Mumbai Indians. I don’t know about Virat, honestly. I think he would want to take a break," Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

"If tomorrow Rohit decides he does not want to play, MI should absorb him immediately. He has won five titles and has won a World Cup for India too. Knowing MI, I don’t think they will leave him either,” he added.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli pushing boundaries for 2027 WC
Currently, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are fully focused on representing India in the next ODI World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in late 2027.
For that, the experienced duo are leaving no stone unturned, playing every game as if it's their last for their country.
There have been multiple reports stating that the team management wants younger legs instead of Rohit for the marquee event. Still, the veteran opener recently demonstrated his zeal with a counter-attacking century at Lord’s.
What makes Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli special?
After India's shambolic defeat in England ODIs, the next 50-over assignment for the Men in Blue is against the West Indies at home. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to regain their spots in the squad for the home series.
Although Kohli was consistent even in England, Rohit Sharma will look to make the upcoming series count, as he will be up against a relatively easier opposition in his own backyard.
Meanwhile, the duo’s experience will be extremely important for the Men in Blue in the ODI World Cup, especially given their track record in South African conditions.
That said, Rohit's ability to tear apart any bowling attack will be critical, while Kohli's anchoring skills make him a cut above the rest. At the same time, they will add stability to the batting unit, which would be of the utmost importance in high-stakes games.
