The BCCI officially unveiled India’s squad for the upcoming Test and ODI series against New Zealand. However, explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to find a spot, leaving Ravichandran Ashwin furious.
India will tour New Zealand for a 5-game T20I, 2-game Test and 5-game ODI series beginning on October 22. Meanwhile, the ODI leg will kick off on November 4, and the squad for the same was released on October 16.

Interestingly, captain Shubman Gill was rested off the final 3 ODIs, keeping the following Test leg in mind. However, despite his absence, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t find a spot in the ODI squad.
This surprising decision left former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin baffled as he protested against it on his YouTube channel. Ashwin said that repeatedly leaving a talented young player out could damage his confidence and affect his development.
"If Shubman Gill is not playing the last two ODIs, then Yashasvi Jaiswal should definitely get that spot. It is very unfortunate because all of this can ruin his confidence. Now, with the way he was scoring runs, he was a run machine. If his confidence is getting ruined, it is the job of the team management and selectors to give him an opportunity wherever possible,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin also acknowledged that Jaiswal might need to prepare for upcoming Test series. However, he questioned why that preparation should prevent him from getting opportunities in ODIs.
"I agree that he needs to prepare for Test cricket. But tell me, when did Yashasvi Jaiswal last play an ODI? When did he last play a T20? When did he last play a Test match? It is very unfortunate. It is definitely the responsibility of the selectors and team management to look after Yashasvi Jaiswal. He is a precious talent," he added.
Jaiswal’s last ODI appearance
Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal last played an ODI game in June this year against Afghanistan. He had scored a century (110 runs) while chasing a target of 219 runs and stayed unbeaten to help India win by 9 wickets.
Moreover, in his career so far, Jaiswal has played only 6 ODIs, scoring 285 runs at a strike rate of 97, including 2 hundreds. Despite limited chances, he has proven himself in whatever time he got to spend at the crease in the 50-over format.
Hence, with Rohit Sharma’s place uncertain for the 2027 World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s snub for the New Zealand series didn't make sense to many fans and critics, including Ashwin.
