PSL’s 2nd Costliest Team Owner Directly Warns Mohsin Naqvi

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi just received a stern warning from the owner of one of PSL’s most expensive franchises. The owner in contention, Fawad Sarwar of the Hyderabad Kingsmen, recently warned Naqvi about the league’s fading popularity and attributed the same to Pakistan’s lacklustre returns in international cricket off late. 

Sarwar is of the opinion that the national team’s struggles are having a direct impact on the commercial value of the PSL, even though the PSL 2026 season earlier this year turned out to be an unmitigated success story. 

It is worth noting that the PCB chairman has already chaired a meeting with PSL management and franchise owners to review the ‘success’ of PSL 2026 and to begin planning for next year’s PSL 2027.

As per a report by veteran journalist Saleem Khaliq, During a recent PSL meeting involving the PCB and franchise owners, Hyderabad Kingsmen owner Fawad Sarwar reportedly warned chairman Mohsin Naqvi, and urged him to take the necessary steps to improve Pakistan cricket team’s performance. 

The FKS Group owner is of the opinion that Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in international cricket off late is having a “negative impact” on the commercial value and image of the PSL. Fawad Sarwar also stated that such performances can discourage future investments in the league.

The Hyderabad Kingsmen owner even put Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson and Director of High-Performance Aqib Javed to the sword. According to Sarwar, Hesson has repeatedly cited Pakistan’s poor record without offering any solution.

Aqib Javed, meanwhile, needs media training as he has previously lowered people’s expectations by pointing to a “lack of talent” in the country, as per the Hyderabad Kingsmen owner.

PSL 2027 window yet to be decided

The PCB is also yet to decide the scheduling window of the PSL 2027 season next year. While the league has been staged in April-May window in the last two years to coincide with the IPL in India, several reports indicate that PSL might return to its traditional February-March slot for next year’s 2027 edition.

It is worth noting that the 2025 and 2026 editions of the PSL were organized in April and May owing to ICC’s multi-nation tournaments like the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. 

Pakistan’s poor results add weight to Fawad Sarwar’s concerns

Compatible with the concerns raised by Hyderabad Kingsmen owner Fawad Sarwar, Pakistan's recent performances in international cricket have done little to inspire confidence.

The Pakistan national team continues to endure a prolonged period of inconsistent and underwhelming results. For starters, the ‘Men in Green’ are yet to qualify for the semifinals of any ICC event since reaching the final of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. 

Even at the time, Pakistan made it to top four owing to South Africa’s shock defeat at the hands of Netherlands.

Since then, Pakistan suffered a first-round exit at the 2023 ICC ODI and 2024 T20 World Cups, and failed to win a single match in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at home.

Marred with repeated captaincy and coaching staff changes, even the Pakistan Test team is currently placed at the bottom of the 2025-27 ICC WTC cycle.

With PSL 2027 planning already underway, the PCB now faces the challenge of restoring Pakistan cricket's fortunes to safeguard the league's long-term commercial growth.
