Albie Morkel Becomes Head Coach Of Super Kings Franchise

Albie Morkel has re-joined the Super Kings family, albeit in a different capacity. The former South African cricketer, who has previously played for CSK in the IPL, has joined its sister franchise ahead of the upcoming SA20 2027 season.  

Morkel will now be serving the Joburg Super Kings team in South Africa as its head coach, thus replacing former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming in the process.

Albie Morkel joins Joburg Super Kings for SA20 2027

Earlier this month, the Super Kings franchise and head coach Stephen Fleming parted ways from each other. The former New Zealand captain not only coached the CSK in IPL matches, but was also the head coach of the Joburg Super Kings in South Africa-based SA20. 

The Joburg Super Kings franchise has now appointed former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel as its new head coach going forward.

Speaking on his appointment, Morkel said “It is an incredible honour to be appointed Head Coach of the Joburg Super Kings. From wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading one of its franchises as Head Coach, this journey is truly special. I look forward to building on the strong foundations we've created together and helping this group achieve its full potential.”

The SA20 2027 season is scheduled to be organized next year between January 17 and February 21 in South Africa. 

Albie Morkel’s history with Super Kings

Albie Morkel already shares a celebrated history with the Super Kings franchise. The seasoned bowling all-rounder was part of the CSK squad in the inaugural edition of the IPL back in 2008. 

The cricketer ended up playing 78 matches for them over a period of six IPL seasons up until 2013. The former South African player scored over 800 runs for them in the IPL, and also picked up 76 wickets with the ball. He was part of the CSK side that lifted the IPL 2010 and 2011 titles in succession.

Morkel also played an additional 14 games for the CSK, albeit in the now-defunct CLT20. 

Will Albie Morkel also coach CSK?

Previously, Stephen Fleming served as the head coach of both, the CSK in the IPL as well as for the Joburg Super Kings in SA20. Moreover, Fleming also served the Texas Super Kings as its head coach in MLC before parting ways from the Super Kings franchise altogether. 

However, Albie Morkel has been only appointed as the head coach of the JSK team as Fleming’s replacement. For now, the Super Kings franchise is yet to announce who will succeed Stephen Fleming as CSK’s head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season next year.

However, several candidates like Ravichandran Ashwin and Rahul Dravid have been reportedly considered to join the CSK franchise as its new head coach. Moreover, even former captain MS Dhoni has been backed by Ashwin to coach the franchise.
