In a surprising move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) asked Mike Hesson, their white-ball coach, to visit England in the middle of PAK vs ENG 2nd Test, which is taking place at Lord’s, London.

The news came after seeing Pakistan in crisis in England during the ongoing three-match Test series. Notably, Pakistan already have Sarfaraz Ahmed, their red-ball coach, in England for the assinment, with Babar Azam back in charge after an unfortunate injury ruled him out of the series opener.

Mike Hesson’s Pakistan Role In England Still Unclear Despite Emergency PCB Call

As confirmed by many reputed Pakistan media outlets, including journalist Mian Ahmad, Hesson is supposed to land in London sometime today. However, there is no clarity on why exactly he is coming to England and what responsibilities will be given to him for the rest of Pakistan’s England tour.

Pakistan are having a tough time in England. In the ongoing Lord’s Test, they could only last 37.2 overs in the first innings, managing 110 runs.

Even during the series opener, Pakistan had the totals of 171 and 135, which resulted in them losing the match by an innings and 103 runs. They are in a torrid position in Lord’s as well, as England led by 261 runs at stumps on Day 2.

The hosts, led by Joe Root, had 290 and 81/3 so far across both innings, with Emilio Gay and Harry Brook in the middle.

How Has Mike Hesson Fared As Pakistan Coach?

PCB appointed Mike Hesson as Pakistan’s head coach for ODIs and T20Is in May 2025. To be fair, they have not done anything significant to boast since then.

Moreover, to turn things from bad to worse, Pakistan had a terrible T20 World Cup 2026 under Hesson, as they failed to even qualify for the semi-final. They also took quite a few bold calls which made little sense, and often fell to ground altogether whenever a quality opposition came in front of them.

Where Is Pakistan On WTC Table?

In a nine-team World Test Championship (WTC), Pakistan are languished at the rock-bottom, courtesy of having only two wins in seven matches, with the PCT reading 19.05.

They could not have had a worse campaign in the ongoing 2025-2027 cycle, as Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam, along with others, seek to improve their numbers with an aim to avoid more humiliation. Adding to that, Mike Hesson is reportedly joining, with a full Test match still to come in England.

After the Lord’s Test, England and Babar Azam-led Pakistan will play one final time in this ongoing tour at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The match between the two sides will get underway on September 9.
