Ireland captain Paul Stirling suffered a nasty injury against Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on Wednesday, February 11. While the vintage opener came out to bat at his usual position, he was forced to retire after facing just one delivery in the run chase.

Ireland batting coach Gary Wilson has now given a damning verdict regarding Paul Stirling’s injury. Wilson’s remarks indicate that the seasoned pro might well be ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Paul Stirling’s injury “doesn’t look great”, confirms coach

Paul Stirling suffered a nasty knee injury while fielding during the Australian innings earlier in match number 14 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Despite his injury, the cricketer came out to open for Ireland, only to retire and walk back to the sheds after facing one delivery.

Ireland batting coach Gary Wilson said that the cricketer has gone for scans and the entire team management is now awaiting the results. However, by the looks of the injury, Wilson added that Stirling is not looking great at the moment.

He said, “It doesn't look great. He went for a scan this evening, so we'll have to wait for confirmation.”

As of now, it remains to be seen if Paul Stirling will be available to play Ireland’s remaining matches of the tournament. From Gary Wilson’s perspective, the possibility of Stirling getting ruled out is very much on the cards. Cricket Ireland will be expected to drop an update regarding the opener’s fitness soon.

How did Paul Stirling suffer his knee injury?

Paul Stirling injured his knee by landing on it after taking a successful catch in the seventh over of the Australian innings. Stationed at cover, the cricketer jumped in the air and took a sensational catch to dismiss attacking Australian opener Josh Inglis for an electrifying 17-ball 37 off George Dockrell.

While Stirling still came out to bat as Ireland opener, he clearly struggled in his run as he was spotted limping towards the non-striker’s end.

Ireland falls to the brink of elimination after Australia thrashing

Australia mounted 182-6 in 20 overs upfront courtesy of swift 37s from Josh Inglis and Matt Renshaw, and a fiery 29-ball 45 from hard-hitting all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.

Chasing 183, the entire Irish line-up bundled out for just 115 in 16.5 overs, with George Dockrell himself composing 41 of those runs. For Australia, tearaway paceman Nathan Ellis (4-12) and senior spinner Adam Zampa (4-23) both picked up four wickets each in the innings to rip through eight of the 10 fallen Ireland batters.

Losing the match by 67 runs, the outcome marked Ireland’s second defeat in succession this 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. As of now, they are placed third on the Group B points table while holding a dismal NRR of -2.175.

Falling on the brink of yet another first-round elimination, the Ireland team will now face Oman in a must-win game on February 14 at the SSC Ground in Colombo.
