The Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 is set for an exciting clash between England and Sri Lanka on Sunday, February 22. The match will take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The biggest talking point ahead of the game is the Pallekele weather report for ENG vs SL.

Rain has already disrupted the tournament's Super 8 stage, with the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium being washed out without a single ball being bowled.

Pakistan had won the toss and chosen to bowl first, but continuous rain forced officials to call off the match.

Heavy Rain Forecast Raises Concerns for ENG vs SL Super 8 Match

According to the Pallekele weather forecast (AccuWeather.com), thick clouds are expected to cover the sky throughout Sunday (February 22) for ENG vs SL.

There is a high chance of rain, with a precipitation probability of 87% during the match time (Afternoon). Around 9.1 mm of rainfall is predicted during the day, possibly lasting for nearly three hours.

Temperature is expected to reach a maximum of 26°C at Pallekele. The RealFeel temperature may touch 28°C, cloud cover is expected to be 99-100%, meaning very little sunlight will reach the ground.

There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening. While winds are expected to remain light, wet outfield conditions and rain could make it difficult for a full match to take place.

What if the ENG vs SL Super 8 match is abandoned?

If rain interrupts the England vs Sri Lanka match, what happens next?

If the ENG vs SL match is washed out due to Pallekele weather, both teams will collect one point each.

Since Pakistan and New Zealand also shared points after their abandoned game, all four teams in the group would stand level on one point after their first Super 8 fixture.

In the current scenario, all four teams in Group 2- Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand, and England are in a tight race for the semi-finals.

Semi-final qualification scenario for ENG, SL, PAK, NZ

Sri Lanka's semi-final qualification scenario

If today’s match between Sri Lanka and England is washed out, Sri Lanka will get one point for now. They will next play against New Zealand and Pakistan in their Super 8 matches.

To keep their semi-final hopes alive, Sri Lanka will need to win both of these upcoming matches. If they manage to win both, they will finish with 5 points.

Pakistan's semi-final qualification scenario

Pakistan have 1 point after their match against New Zealand was washed out. With two remaining matches against England and Sri Lanka, they are in a must-win situation.

If Pakistan wins both of these matches, they will finish with 5 points, which will almost certainly secure them a semi-final berth. However, if they win only one of the two matches, they will end with 3 points and will be in a much riskier position.

New Zealand's semi-final qualification scenario

New Zealand is in a similar situation. They have 1 point after their match was washed out and now face Sri Lanka and England. Like Pakistan, New Zealand will need to win both of its remaining matches to reach 5 points, which should be enough to get a semi-final spot.

England's semi-final qualification scenario

If England vs Sri Lanka is washed out, they will also have 1 point and will face a tough challenge ahead with two important matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. To qualify without relying on NRR, England must win both these matches to finish with 5 points.

If the Sri Lanka-England match is also washed out, all four teams- Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand, and England- will be tied with 1 point each. This would leave the group extremely open, with each team still having two matches left to play.

The qualification scenario for all teams comes down to the simple fact that winning their remaining matches is crucial.

ICC rules leave 'No Backup' plan for Super 8 matches

According to the ICC's regulations, there are no reserve days for Super 8 matches. Reserve days are only allocated for the semifinals and the final.

For a result to be declared, a minimum of five overs per side must be completed. If the rain prevents even that minimum from being played before the cut-off time, the match will be officially abandoned and recorded as a 'No Result.'

This rule has already been applied for the PAK vs NZ Super 8 match, and it could be applied again if weather conditions do not improve and the match is not completed.

Sri Lanka and England: T20 World Cup tournament so far

Sri Lanka won three of its four group-stage matches, including a strong victory over Australia. This match is important for building momentum. England also secured three wins in the group stage after bouncing back from an early setback, and will be equally eager to start the Super 8 with a win.

However, all plans now depend on the weather. If rain dominates proceedings once again, the race for the semifinals could become even tighter.
