Pakistan is set to battle the England cricket team in a few days for their red-ball contest. The Test series to be hosted by the Three White Lions will be overseen by the World Test Championship rankings and will be important for both teams. However, silly mistakes will not be spared; it doesn't matter which team does that.
Azan Awais, Pakistan’s newest batting talent, made such a silly mistake during the practice match between Pakistan and England’s minnow squad. On August 13, against Professional County Club Select XI, Azan Awais dropped a sitter while being in the slip cordon for the Men in Green.
What Mistake Did Azan Awais Make In The Pakistan vs PCC XI Practice Match?
The match, played at Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham, had England batting first, with Emilio Gay, who had an injury scare earlier, opening alongside PCC 11 skipper Tom Haines. Although Gay was out for a duck, Pakistan struggled to take quick wickets.
Caleb Falconer, who was still batting on 57 at the end of the day, was handed a golden ticket and a lifeline when he was on 29. As Ubaid Shah, Pakistan's young pace bowler, delivered a fiery good-length ball that was seaming in with good height and bounce, Falconer tried to defend it away from his body.

The ball quickly took the outside edge of the bat. As soon as the ball kissed the nick, it flew through the air, and what looked like a sitter for the slip cordon at first slip, Azan Awais, failed to hold on to it and dropped it.
As the ball came towards Azan, he tried to collect it comfortably. However, after getting his hands to the ball, it slipped and bounced out of his hands, resulting in a dropped catch and a lifeline for Falconer.
Ubaid Shah was disappointed as Falconer continued to bat with Saif Zaib before the latter was dismissed by Khurram Shehzad for 65 runs.

This habit of dropping dollies hasn't been a new characteristic of the Pakistan men's cricket team. One of the most memorable blunders came from Rahat Ali. Back in the 2015 World Cup, he dropped an absolute sitter at fine leg off Shane Watson from Wahab Riaz's delivery. That gave Watson a lifeline, which helped Australia win the match later.
In the 2023 World Cup, Usama Mir continued the tradition against Australia and dropped David Warner at mid-on, which resulted in Warner going on to hit a massive century for the team.
In a more hilarious incident, Ahmed Shehzad famously dropped a sitter near the boundary line. After dropping it, he immediately appealed for a TV review, pretending that he had caught the ball, which left quite a memory for cricket fans as well as the cricketers.
Will Azan Awais Miss Out From The Playing XI in the 1st Test?
Azan made his Test debut against Bangladesh on May 8, 2026. In his debut innings, he hit a glorious century while opening alongside his partner, Imam-ul-Haq. Since then, he has never looked back and also featured in the West Indies tour, where he managed to average only 19.00.
However, despite his failure in the West Indies, Pakistan backed him for the important England tour. So far, in the four matches he has played, he averages 28.50, with one century and one half-century under his name.
Pakistan's backing of Azan Awais stresses the fact that he will continue to make his place in the playing XI alongside his opening partner, Imam-ul-Haq. Unless he is ruled out due to any unforeseen circumstances, Awais is likely to open for Pakistan in the August 19 match too.
