On Saturday, February 7, the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup 2026 got underway with Pakistan taking on the Netherlands at the SSC cricket ground in Colombo, Sri Lanka. For the opening match, the Salman Agha-led side won the toss and asked the Netherlands to bat first.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the Dutch got off to a pleasant start and put 100 runs on the board after just 13 overs and seven wickets in hand. The internet soon buzzed with the ā€˜#UpsetLoading’ trend. Meanwhile, the official broadcasters JioHotstar too joined the fun and put out a post humiliating Pakistan.

Broadcasters predict Pakistan to lose against the Netherlands

Notably, the broadcasters, just before the start of the T20 World Cup 2026, shared predictions from their panellists regarding the results of the three matches scheduled for day one. In the now viral tweet, the panelists, in unison, passed a verdict that the Pakistan vs Netherlands will see an upset.

Similarly, for the West Indies vs Scotland and India vs USA match, they passed a ā€˜300 runs’ alert for the games scheduled in the later stages of the day.

Pakistan and the history of upsets in important matches

Notably, Pakistan have a history of upsets in ICC tournaments. Their most recent shock came in 2024 T20 World Cup when co-hosts USA beat then Babar Azam-led side by 5 runs in the super-over.

Similarly, Bangladesh beat Pakistan by 62 runs in the 1999 ODI World Cup.  The 2007 ODI World Cup also saw the same when Ireland had upset the Men in Green after a three-wicket win.

Shedding light on T20 World Cups, then Pakistan don't have a very good history of opening games. As mentioned about the 2024 event in West Indies and USA, the Men in Green also saw a humiliating defeat against Zimbabwe where they suffered a shocking single run defeat.

Therefore, the ''#upsetloading' trend has picked up the speed on social media.

What would a defeat against Netherlands mean for Pakistan?

In case, Pakistan suffer a defeat against the Netherlands, then the Salman Ali Agha-led side will be in huge trouble because they have already boycotted the India match scheduled on February 15 in Colombo.

Notably, the ICC will consider it as a forfeit match and they will suffer a heavy dent on their net-run rate. Therefore, the Men in Green will have just two matches left in their group stage and at max, they could reach is four points.

On the other hand, the likes of Netherlands, USA, and Namibia can reach a maximum of 4 points despite defeats against India and can out position Pakistan in the net run-rate to crash them out of the T20 World Cup in the group-stages for the second straight year.

Talking about the ongoing match, the Men in Green have made a remarkable turn-around and restricted Netherlands to just 129/7 after 17 overs.
