Former Pakistan fast bowler and well-known commentator Waqar Younis made an unexpected on-air mistake involving Abrar Ahmed during the Pakistan vs Netherlands match in the T20 World Cup 2026.

The match was special as it marked the opening game of the tenth edition of the tournament. It was played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Saturday, February 7.

Waqar Younis’ on-air slip-up during PAK vs NED match

The incident took place after Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first. During the Netherlands’ innings, Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed was introduced into the attack.

In the 8th over, Abrar produced a brilliant delivery to dismiss Colin Ackermann, picking up his first wicket of the match. Abrar bowled a good-length delivery around the off stump, which appeared to be a carrom ball.

Ackermann tried to play the ball towards mid-on with hard hands. However, he ended up getting an inside edge, and the ball crashed back onto the stumps.

Notably, during this moment of excitement, Waqar Younis made a surprising mistake. While praising the spinner, he accidentally referred to Abrar Ahmed as “Abrar ul Haq.” Waqar said, “He’s a wicket-taker, Abrar ul Haq,” which immediately caught the attention of viewers.

It is important to note that Abrar ul Haq, notably, is a famous Pakistan singer and former cricketer. Coming from an experienced commentator like Waqar Younis, the blunder left many online fans amused and surprised. One said, “Commentary slip or legendary moment? 👀"

Netherlands’ steady batting performance against Pakistan

Meanwhile, shifting focus back to the match, the Netherlands started their innings with decent intent. They were hoping to begin the tournament on a positive note. However, Pakistan struck early, removing opener Max O’Dowd in the fourth over. Notably, Mohammad Nawaz provided the breakthrough and gave Pakistan early control.

Soon after, in the very next over, Salman Mirza dismissed Michael Levitt, who scored a quick 24 runs off just 15 balls. Following that, Bas de Leede tried to stabilise the innings but was also removed by Mohammad Nawaz after scoring 30 runs. As a result, the Netherlands found themselves four wickets down.

Despite losing wickets, the Dutch batters showed composure. They avoided panic and focused on rotating the strike. At the time of writing, during the drinks break, the Netherlands were placed at 112 for 4 after 14 overs.

Pakistan look to secure strong win

It is important to note that this match holds significance for both teams. Adding to the overall context, recent political developments have drawn attention to the tournament. The Pakistan Prime Minister confirmed that Pakistan will not play against India in the group-stage match scheduled for February 15, following a government decision to boycott the fixture.

Because of this decision, Pakistan will be looking to secure strong and convincing victories so they can finish in the top two positions and qualify for the Super 8 stage of the tournament.
