In a crucial development, Nahida Akter is reportedly set to replace Nigar Sultana as Bangladesh Women’s T20I captain. Sobhana Mostary, meanwhile, will serve as vice-captain.

This comes after Nigar Sultana decided to step down as T20I captain after the Asian Games, where Bangladesh lost the bronze medal match. She argued that she wanted to focus more on her individual game.

Nahida Akter chosen as Nigar Sultana’s successor

Meanwhile, according to Cricbuzz, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally replaced Nigar Sultana with Nahida Akter as team's new T20I captain. She is reportedly handed the captaincy after discussions with the selection panel and other officials.

Not only that, but Sobhana Mostary also got a promotion as she is likely to become the new vice-captain in the T20I format. This new leadership group will take charge effective immediately.

Notably, Bangladesh's next assignment is the ICC Women's Emerging Nations Trophy in Thailand. Their campaign is scheduled to begin against Pakistan on November 12, 2026, where Nahida Akter is expected to make her captaincy debut.

It’s also important to note that this change only applies to the T20I format. Nigar Sultana will continue to remain the captain of Bangladesh's ODI team going forward.

Who is Nahida Akter?

Nahida Akter is a left-arm spin bowler and one of Bangladesh's leading wicket-takers in women's T20Is. She has 132 dismissals to her name in 113 matches with a bowling average of 17.38.

Also, she was a no-brainer choice for the BCB, as Akter has been Bangladesh’s vice-captain since 2022. So, she has enough leadership experience to replace Sultana.

Meanwhile, Nigar Sultana stepped down abruptly after the Asian Games due to reported conflict with the BCB. She was apparently unhappy with the board’s treatment and tendered her resignation without any prior notice or discussion with the board.

On the other hand, the BCB were caught by surprise. They spoke to Nigar Sultana and eventually decided to accept her resignation and have now chosen Nahida Akter as her successor.
