Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has responded to the serious allegations levelled by former head coach Gary Kirsten.

Last weekend, Kirsten accused the PCB of excessively interfering with the coaching matters of the Pakistan men’s national team, a situation that played a significant role in his premature exit from the position.

The former South Africa cricketer also added that coaches in Pakistan are often considered disposable whenever the team underperforms.

Mohsin Naqvi evades responding to Gary Kirsten’s remarks

While Gary Kirsten seemingly blamed the entire top brass of Pakistan cricket for interfering in the coaching matters of the men’s national team, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has refrained from directly addressing those claims.

While speaking with the reporters at a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, March 22, Naqvi refused to take the blame by claiming that he had limited interaction with Gary Kirsten during the latter’s time as Pakistan head coach.

Mohsin Naqvi said, “I didn’t have many interactions with Gary Kirsten, so it would be better if those people who were co-ordinating things with him and involved regularly with him responded in detail to his allegations.”

Gary Kirsten’s Pakistan tenure and allegations explained

Last week, Gary Kirsten spoke about the excessive level of interference in the coaching matters of Pakistan cricket. While speaking on talkSPORT Cricket, he said, “The thing that surprised me more than anything was the level of interference.

I don’t think I have ever seen it at that level before. Did it surprise me? I don’t know, but it was significant.”

He added that constant “outside noise” made it difficult for him to come and formulate ways with the team.

Kirsten said, “It is quite difficult for a coach to come and formulate a way that you can work with the players when there is just this constant noise from the outside. It was tough, just this constant noise from the outside and a lot of punitive actions around poor performance and stuff like that.”

It is worth noting that Gary Kirsten, who led the Indian cricket team to 2011 World Cup victory as head coach, was appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball coach in April 2024 by the PCB.

While Kirsten was named Pakistan’s coach for a two-year period, he resigned from his position in less than six months citing “creative differences.”

From Gary Kirsten to Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s story with overseas coaches

Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie, who was Pakistan’s Test coach at the time, subsequently handled the team’s white-ball setup as a replacement for Kirsten.

However, even Gillespie endured a similarly short stint, stepping down from the role amid reports of internal disagreements and administrative instability within the setup.

This recurring pattern highlights deeper structural issues within Pakistan cricket, raising concerns over consistency and long-term planning at the administrative level.

As of now, New Zealand-based Mike Hesson is serving as the head coach of Pakistan’s ODI and T20I teams. Several reports are indicating that former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed will likely be named as the national men’s team’s next Test coach.
