Why did the umpire warn Shami and East Zone?

The reason behind the intervention soon became clear. The umpires appeared to be inspecting the ball, possibly after Shami asked them to check its condition. East Zone, including Shami were then warned against using excessive sweat to shine the ball.

The incident falls under MCC Law 41.3, which deals with changing the condition of the match ball. The law does not allow players to alter the ball unless the action is specifically permitted under cricket’s laws during play.

However, using sweat on the ball is allowed under the laws. There is no specific rule that mentions or defines the excessive use of sweat, making the umpire’s intervention a crucial talking point during the 2026 Duleep Trophy final.

Law 41.3.1 states that umpires must make frequent and irregular inspections of the ball. They must also inspect it immediately if they suspect anyone is attempting to change its condition, except for actions permitted under Law 41.3.2.

Mohammed Shami received the umpire's warning, but something else became the real highlight of the day for cricket fans. His reverse swing with the old ball, especially in the second session on Day 3, was a treat to watch.
