East Zone's start was built around a brilliant opening stand between Abhimanyu Easwaran and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who put on 100 before Sooryavanshi fell for a quick 44. Easwaran followed with an impressive 72, while Sudip Kumar Gharami was dismissed for six, leaving East at 147/3. But Shikhar Mohan and Ishan Kishan then rebuilt the innings, with Mohan making an attractive 85 before Chama Milind got him. From there, Kishan and Kushagra completely changed the complexion of the game, adding an unbeaten century stand and taking East from 241/4 to 385/4 by stumps. Kishan's 111 came from 135 balls, while Kushagra's 63 included five sixes.
For South Zone, Day 1 was a frustrating exercise in containment rather than breakthrough. Mohammed Siraj bowled 14 overs but conceded 96 without a wicket, while Tripurana Vijay went for 114 in 22 overs despite claiming a wicket. Almost every batter has made a valuable contribution apart from Sudip Kumar Gharami, and East Zone will be looking to build on this strong position tomorrow and move closer to the 500-run mark. East Zone won the toss and opted to bat first, with Abhimanyu Easwaran and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi putting South Zone under pressure with a 100-run opening stand. Sooryavanshi was the first to depart for 44, while Easwaran looked well set before being run out for 72 late in the session. East Zone went into Lunch at 133/2. After the break, Sudip Kumar Gharami fell for 6 very early in the afternoon session. Ishan Kishan joined Shikhar Mohan in the middle and the duo began rebuilding the innings.
Mohan brought up a fine half-century and looked increasingly assured as he eyed a hundred, while Kishan kept the scoreboard moving with some authoritative stroke play. Just when East Zone appeared to be in control, South Zone switched to a short-ball tactic late in the session, and Chama Milind reaped the reward by dismissing Mohan for an excellent 85. East Zone reached 246/4 at Tea.
