Mohammed Shami is not finished yet, and he keeps reminding everyone, especially the people who sit in the chairs at the office of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during squad selections.

While picking India squads for Test and ODIs against Afghanistan, the BCCI revealed that they have moved beyond Mohammed Shami, who is now 35 years old. Yet, he shut out the noise by performing on the field on Saturday at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens during Match 3 of the Bengal T20 League 2026.

Mohammed Shami Claims A Stunning Hat-Trick

Seeing someone take a hat-trick is very rare these days, and Mohammed Shami did exactly that to draw BCCI's attention. Playing for Siliguri Strikers, Shami wreaked havoc against Rarh Tigers, and achieved the feat during the 16th over of the innings.

More significantly, it all started with the wicket of Shahbaz Ahmed, who is also a famous name in Bengal’s current batch, and plays alongside Shami in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Apart from Shahbaz, the other two victims of Shami with the following deliveries were Rohit Kumar and Dipanjan Mukherjee. Eventually, he finished with impressive figures of 4/27 off his four overs.

Shami Powers Siliguri Strikers To Victory

Riding on Shami’s heroics, coupled with Karan Lal’s 3/36, Siliguri restricted Rarh Tigers to 184/9 after putting 208/4 on the board. With the bat for Sudip Chatterjee’s Siliguri, Vishal Bhati shone the most, smashing 86 off just 46 deliveries with six sixes and five fours.

Pramod Chandila played a breezy cameo as well, making 36 off just 16 balls, which eventually held the key for Siliguri’s win. With that, they moved to the top of the points table. Malda Smashers and Purulia Royals had victories as well, but Siliguri had a better net run rate (NRR) than them.

How Has Shami Fared In IPL 2026?

Shami was exceptional with the new ball in IPL 2026. He took the wickets of KL Rahul, Priyansh Arya and Abhishek Sharma among first-over wickets, although the form dipped further.

In total, Shami has picked up 12 wickets in 13 matches with an average of 38.25. Later, the economy worsened as well, going for nine runs an over.

Overall, Shami has played 132 IPL matches over the years and claimed 145 wickets with an economy rate of 8.67. He won the Purple Cap in IPL 2023 while playing for Gujarat Titans.

BCCI Unlikely To Bring Mohammed Shami To India Squad

Unfortunately, there is little chance that Shami gets back to the India squad across any format. Talking about T20Is, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is currently way ahead of him in terms of consistency and significance.

Hence, even if there is a place for a veteran to re-join India's pace attack, it should ideally be Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the BCCI’s end, not Mohammed Shami.
