Moeen Ali has expressed his dream of becoming England head coach. With the Englishmen struggling to come up with the desired results under Brendon McCullum off late, Ali’s distant dream might not seem entirely far-fetched anymore.

It is worth noting that the former England all-rounder is currently bracing himself to tour Pakistan for the upcoming PSL 2026 season.

Moeen Ali says coaching England a huge dream

While speaking with ESPNCricinfo, former England cricketer Moeen Ali said that he wants to become a “top international coach” someday. He said, “That's the dream. One hundred percent, that'd be the dream ... I think one day, I would want to be a top international coach. Definitely.”

The seasoned all-rounder is already pursuing his ambition by studying for his ECB Level Three qualification. Moeen Ali’s father Munir was also a coach and the cricketer still runs his Moeen Cricket Academy.

He added, “I used to coach for my dad's academy, before I played for England. I used to coach heavily. My brothers all coach and coaching is part of our genetics in some ways. It's a journey that I've always been on.”

Moeen reveals his coaching mindset

While current England head coach Brendon McCullum follows a counterattacking mindset, Moeen presents himself as an old-school coach. In the age of T20 cricket, the former cricketer believes that age-old formats like Test cricket is lacking “technique” these days.

Moeen Ali added, “I'm a massive believer in technique. I always have been. I think the one that's lacking in cricket right now generally, with so much T20 cricket - which is great, obviously, in a way - is technique, and having the foundation of proper batting, like in Test matches.”

On the possibility of coaching England in the future, the 38-year-old stated that it was not something he was actively chasing at the moment. However, he also claimed that things can “happen quickly” even though he is currently playing franchise cricket.

The all-rounder said, “It feels miles away. [But] when you're playing club cricket or domestic cricket, you feel like England's miles away… Things can change. Things can happen quickly. I'm going to take my time with it to do that, do some punditry, and see which one I like and see which one naturally takes me. I've always been the sort of person that goes with the flow and [I'll] see what happens, and see where they both take me.”

Moeen to head to Pakistan in March

Currently residing in Dubai, Moeen is set to travel to Pakistan next month for the PSL 2026 season. The cricketer was roped in by the Karachi Kings franchise, thus making his return to the tournament after a gap of six years.

Moeen Ali has also confirmed his availability for Yorkshire in this year’s T20 Blast 2026 season.

Over the past few months, the legendary England all-rounder has competed in several overseas T20 leagues like WCL, Global Super League, CPL, Abu Dhabi T10 and the ILT20.

He announced his retirement from international cricket back in mid-2024. Ali was part of the England team that lifted the 2019 ICC World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup in England and Australia respectively. During his 10-year journey with England, the cricketer played 68 Tests, 138 ODIs and 92 T20I matches.
