In a recent development, former England cricketer Moeen Ali has reversed his retirement from English domestic cricket with immediate effect. Moeen Ali’s decision confirms his availability for Yorkshire for this year’s T20 Blast.

Notably, Ali will also register for The Hundred auction, which is set to take place on March 12, with The Hundred implementing the auction model for the first time in the league’s history.

Why did Moeen Ali reverse his retirement decision?

As understood, Moeen had retired from English domestic cricket to find a way around the ECB’s new policy on no-objection certificates. However, he has now changed his decision and will move forward with Yorkshire after previously playing for Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

The all-rounder’s decision was welcomed with open arms by Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s general manager, who lauded Ali’s presence and his invaluable experience, which will add to Yorkshire’s campaign, a team that has never successfully won the T20 Blast.

"Moeen is a world-class allrounder whose influence extends well beyond his on-field ability. His experience and leadership will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our T20 side and build a team capable of challenging consistently in the Blast,” Hamilton said.

Gavin also praised the immense value Moeen Ali will bring to the dressing room and stated that the team is excited to have him on board.

“He will bring presence to the dressing room, and his arrival will be positive for the wider club and for cricket in Yorkshire. His decision to join Yorkshire reflects the direction of travel at the club and the environment we are building.

We're excited about what Moeen will bring, not just in performances, but in setting standards and helping drive the group forward,” Hamilton added.

Moeen to feature alongside Adil Rashid, Bairstow

Moeen will possibly play alongside his former England teammate and close friend Adil Rashid, who has not featured in the Blast since 2022 but remains a Yorkshire player. He will also reunite with Jonny Bairstow, with whom he shared the 2019 World Cup campaign.

Speaking in his own words, the 38-year-old said he was excited to join Yorkshire for the Blast. Moeen Ali also expressed his enthusiasm about working with head coach Anthony McGrath as the team pushes forward in search of its maiden title-winning campaign.

"I'm delighted to be joining Yorkshire for the Blast. It's a huge club with a proud history, but what really appeals to me is where the team is heading. There's a lot of talent in the squad and the chance to work with Anthony [McGrath, head coach] and help push the group forward is exciting for me.

I've always loved playing at Headingley. The wicket, the atmosphere and the supporters make it a special place. This feels like a fresh challenge, and I'm arriving hungry for it. I want to bring my experience, enjoy my cricket and help Yorkshire compete," Moeen said in a club statement.

Moeen’s packed schedule since mid 2025

Moeen Ali retired from domestic cricket last July after playing for Warwickshire against Leicestershire in the 2025 T20 Blast. Since then, he has remained busy with franchise cricket around the world.

He featured in the Global Super League, WCL T20 2025, the Caribbean Premier League, the Abu Dhabi T10 League, ILT20 2025, and, most recently, the Bangladesh Premier League 2025–26, where he scored 81 runs in seven innings and picked up six wickets.
