Matheesha Pathirana's IPL 2026 Status For KKR Revealed

Matheesha Pathirana, recently acquired for INR 18 Crore, has given a significant development on his availability for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming IPL 2026, which begins on March 28, 2026.

Ahead of the season, the big buy looked like a smart move by the KKR, considering the amount of talent and experience Pathirana brings after his time with Chennai Super Kings. However, things took a drastic turn when the Sri Lankan pacer injured his calf during the group clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Australia in Pallekele last month.

Matheesha Pathirana gives a major update on IPL 2026 participation for KKR

Amid the uncertainty around Pathirana’s IPL 2026 participation, the cricketer’s manager, namely Amila Kalugalage, took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared a post. The X post featured Matheesha Pathirana wearing the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2026 jersey.

Thus, KKR fans and experts alike are speculating that the pacer will soon join his new IPL franchise.

It is worth noting that only a week back, Pathirana shared a picture of himself on his social media platform, giving an update on his injury recovery. The pacer explained that he had yet to travel to India and join the KKR practice camp ahead of the start of the cash-rich tournament.

"Hello everyone!! Just to clarify, I'm still in Sri Lanka continuing my rehab with SLC. I haven't gone to India yet, so please stay calm ☺️🤍!" Pathirana wrote in a story posted on his Instagram.

KKR’s endless woes for the upcoming season

While it seems that the Sri Lankan pacer, Matheesha Pathirana, is all set to join the KKR camp, all is still not well for the Kolkata-based franchise.

Another fast bowler, Harshit Rana, suffered a knee injury during a T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa earlier this year. The injury proved serious enough to rule him out of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, with Mohammed Siraj replacing him.

Rana underwent knee surgery in Mumbai on February 9. While the surgery was successful, the fast bowler is expected to require around two to three months for full recovery, further potentially ruling him out for the IPL 2026

Rana’s potential absence could significantly weaken KKR’s bowling attack. It is worth noting that the pacer was a key member of the Kolkata-based title-winning squad in 2024. The situation becomes more complicated as Mustafizur Rahman is no longer a part of the squad.

A rare light of hope amid crisis

Amid the injury concerns, the franchise brought Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement option for Mustafizur Rahman, and with Matheesha Pathirana’s confirmed participation, the KKR management will take a breath of fresh air.

However, filling Harshit Rana’s role in the bowling attack may not be straightforward.

The team’s pace attack also includes young stars like Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi, and Akash Deep. Thus, the unit could look far less experienced heading into IPL 2026
