Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana has addressed the growing uncertainty around his availability for IPL 2026, with developments suggesting a delayed start to his campaign. The right-arm fast bowler, who was signed by KKR for INR 18 crore, is currently recovering from an injury sustained during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

Notably, Pathirana’s setback occurred in the middle of the tournament, where he featured in only three matches. During a game against Australia, he suffered a calf strain and had to leave the field with assistance. Consequently, he was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament and has since been undergoing rehabilitation.

As things stand, his recovery process is ongoing, which has directly impacted his IPL preparations.

KKR head coach gave a major update on Matheesha Pathirana

Following this, KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar confirmed that the pacer will miss the initial phase of IPL 2026. He further stated that Pathirana is expected to join the squad around mid-April, provided he regains full fitness in time. Therefore, the franchise might have to adjust their bowling plans for the opening matches.

In addition to the injury concerns, a new development from Sri Lanka Cricket added another layer of uncertainty. Last week, the board made it mandatory for players to clear a fitness test before receiving No-Objection Certificates (NOCs), which are required to participate in franchise leagues like the IPL.

According to an official release, Nuwan Thushara will receive his NOC only after clearing the fitness test. Meanwhile, players such as Wanindu Hasaranga, Eshan Malinga, and Pathirana are yet to undergo the test as they continue their rehabilitation. However, SLC later denied Nuwan Thushara the required NOC to feature in the league.

Moreover, recent reports indicate that Matheesha Pathirana did not appear for the scheduled fitness assessment, which has further delayed clarity on his participation.

Matheesha Pathirana shares cryptic message

At the same time, on March 26, Matheesha Pathirana shared a cryptic message on social media, stating, “Let whatever happens, happen. Even if the sky comes crashing down, don’t take it too seriously — those are minor things. Let’s just keep going with a smile!”

This post quickly drew attention, and fans began speculating about its meaning. As a result, discussions have emerged suggesting that he might miss a larger portion of the tournament if his recovery does not progress as expected.

SLC introduced fitness test for Sri Lankan players

Furthermore, the fitness test introduced by SLC is comprehensive. It includes five components: a 2 km run, a 20-meter sprint, the 5-0-5 agility test, the skinfold test, and the countermovement jump (CMJ) test.

To qualify, players must secure a minimum of 17 points overall. Notably, completing the 2 km run within 7 minutes and 30 seconds earns 7 points, making it a key part of the evaluation process.

Meanwhile, KKR are set to begin their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. They are also scheduled to face SRH, Punjab Kings, and LSG in subsequent matches.
