In a recent development, Bangladesh are considering Litton Das, the current T20I skipper, as the front-runner to lead the white-ball side, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz likely to be removed as the ODI captain.
Reportedly, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to move away from the current captaincy structure, where Litton leads the T20I side, Mehidy Hasan Miraz captains the ODI team, and Najmul Hossain Shanto remains in charge of the Test side.
Bangladesh adopt new captaincy style before 2027 World Cup
Earlier, in 2022, Bangladesh implemented a three-captain system, with Shakib Al Hasan leading the Test team, Tamim Iqbal captaining the ODI side, and Mahmudullah taking charge of the T20I format. However, the structure underwent significant changes over the next few years.
In June 2025, Mehidy Hasan Miraz was appointed as the ODI captain, with Litton and Shanto taking over the T20I and Test sides respectively. Now, following the Bengal Tigers’ disappointing ODI performances under Mehidy's leadership, the cricket board is reportedly reconsidering its approach.
Although Mehidy's tenure as ODI captain was expected to extend through to the 2027 ODI World Cup, the team's recent performances have raised concerns. Bangladesh have managed just two wins in 13 overseas ODIs during his tenure, prompting the board to consider handing the white-ball captaincy to Litton Das instead.

Towhid Hridoy to serve as Litton Das’ deputy
Under the proposed structure, the Bengal Tigers would move to a split red-ball and white-ball captaincy model, with Litton leading both the ODI and T20I sides while Najmul Hossain Shanto continues as the Test captain.
Meanwhile, Towhid Hridoy is expected to serve as Litton's deputy in the ODI format as well, having already been appointed the vice-captain of the T20I side under Litton's leadership.
BCB also mulled Najmul Hossain Shanto option
Sources within the BCB have confirmed that the proposal will be discussed during the scheduled board meeting on Wednesday, July 29. However, Litton Das taking over the ODI captaincy will still require the approval of the board directors before any official announcement is made.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the board had initially considered reinstating Najmul Hossain Shanto as the ODI captain after removing him from the role last year. However, the directors eventually decided against that option, believing that a clear split between red-ball and white-ball captaincy would be a more effective long-term strategy for the national side.
Who has been the best ODI captain for Bangladesh?
Statistically, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has led Bangladesh in 24 ODIs, winning 10 matches while suffering 13 defeats, with one match ending in no result. This gives him a win-to-loss ratio of 0.769.
Litton Das, meanwhile, has captained the national team in seven ODIs, winning three and losing three, with one no result, giving him a superior win-to-loss ratio of 1.0.
Among Bangladesh's ODI captains in recent years, Tamim Iqbal still boasts the strongest record. Between 2019 and 2023, he led the side in 37 ODIs, winning 21 matches and recording a win-to-loss ratio of 1.5, making him the country's most successful ODI captain in that period.
