Rangpur Riders have made an important leadership change as the Bangladesh Premier League 2025-26 moves into its Dhaka phase. Notably, the franchise has announced Litton Das as the new captain for the rest of the tournament.

This decision came after the end of the Sylhet phase and was confirmed by head coach Mickey Arthur during a press conference on Friday.

Litton Das replaces Nurul Hasan Sohan as leader

Litton Das, who is also the national team captain, will now lead Rangpur Riders during the crucial Dhaka leg. The captaincy responsibility has been passed on from Nurul Hasan Sohan, who has been leading the team for several seasons.

Over the years, Sohan has been a key figure in Rangpur’s leadership group. At the same time, the team management has decided to move forward with Litton for the remainder of the season in search of better balance and stronger performances.

Head coach Mickey Arthur shared that the change was initiated by Sohan himself. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter felt it was the right moment to step aside and focus more on his own game.

Arthur explained the situation clearly during the press conference and praised Sohan’s attitude toward the team.

“Sohan came to me a few days ago and said he wanted to step down as captain. He wants to work more on his own performance,” Arthur said.

“That says a lot about the kind of person he is. He’s not selfish at all. He’s putting the team first while also trying to get the best out of himself.”

Sohan’s decision came during a difficult personal run in the tournament. He has struggled with the bat this season, scoring only 30 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 90.90. Even so, his contribution as a leader in previous seasons remains valuable.

Litton Das eyes strong finish for Riders in BPL

Under his captaincy, Rangpur Riders, the champions of the 2017 BPL, reached the playoffs in the last edition and are still fighting strongly for a top-four finish this year.

Litton Das steps into the role at a time when the team needs stability and confidence. He has shown decent form in the ongoing BPL, scoring 162 runs in eight innings with a strike rate of 135.00. His experience at both domestic and international levels adds strength to Rangpur’s campaign as the competition intensifies.

It is important to note that the Dhaka phase of the BPL began on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, following dramatic events over the previous 36 hours.

During this period, players boycotted scheduled matches on Thursday while demanding the resignation of BCB director M Najmul Islam after his controversial remarks about cricketers.

Currently, Rangpur Riders sit fourth on the points table with eight points from eight matches, having won four games so far. Their next match is against Dhaka Capitals on January 17 at the same venue.
