Jos Buttler still has some big aspirations for his international career for England despite undergoing a below-par T20 World Cup 2026 in India. After failing to register a single half-century in the entire tournament, the former England captain wants to continue playing for his team, but also admitted that such selection matters are not in his hands.

Prior to the showpiece event in India and Sri Lanka, Buttler also failed to register a 50-plus score on any of England’s three preceding T20I tours, aggregating just 142 runs in seven innings in Ireland, New Zealand and Sri Lanka since September last year.

Jos Buttler still ‘hopeful’, wants to continue playing for England

Jos Buttler still has a year-and-a-half remaining in his ECB central contract. As per the ECB schedule, the English team will play its next set of white-ball matches in July this year with five T20Is and three ODIs against Team India at home.

Despite undergoing a disastrous T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter remained optimistic of returning to form as he has played some of his “best cricket” in recent years.

While speaking on For The Love Of Cricket podcast, the 35-year-old said “I hope so. I don't know. Obviously, I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing, but I've been playing some of the best cricket of my [career] in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best.”

Buttler added that while he still wants to continue playing for England as a player, he admitted that any matters of selection are not in his hands. He added, “I certainly have ambitions but no longer being a captain, I'm not a selector and whatever, so what will be will be. Yeah, we will see.”

Buttler admits taking a break from the game helped him

England’s 2022 T20 World Cup winning captain admitted that he took a break with his family after returning home from the 2026 event in India earlier this month. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter added that he enjoyed the break and is starting to “reflect” a few thoughts about the game.

Jos Buttler said “I couldn't have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect. It's exactly what I needed. It was really refreshing - I really enjoyed it, a complete sort of release. I am just starting to reflect a bit and have a few thoughts about what's important to me and my cricket, and why it probably didn't go quite as I would've liked.”

A T20 World Cup to forget for the captain

Jos Buttler aggregated just 87 runs in eight innings of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Maintaining a dismal average of 10.75, the cricketer also held a below par strike rate of just 116.

On the day of the semifinal against India in Mumbai on March 5, the senior opener started off with a slew of boundaries but had his innings curtailed for just 25 as England bowed out of the competition.

Jos Buttler to re-join Gujarat Titans for IPL 2026 after World Cup horror

Jos Buttler will soon be joining the Gujarat Titans franchise for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The senior batter was among the many Titans players retained by the franchise late last year, alongside captain Shubman Gill, and fellow overseas stars like Kagiso Rabada, Glenn Phillips and Rashid Khan.

As per the first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule released by the BCCI earlier this month, the Gujarat Titans franchise will commence its campaign with a match against Punjab Kings. The match will be hosted by Mullanpur on Tuesday, March 31.
